Upgraded to OS X 10.4.1 and WMP no longer works

DrG - 03 Jun 2005 01:49 GMT Ever since I upgraded to OS X 10.4.1, WMP will not work. I can launch it, but no file can be played. Often I will get an "Error, can't creat tmp file" error. The sample file that comes with the installation won't even play: "Doesn't recognaize that stream" is what I get. Something must be corrupted because my office computer which we upgraded to 10.4.1 and then installed WMP for the first time works okay.
I've deleted preferences, redid permissions, even repaired the directory via DiskWarrior and nothing has helped.
Is there a way to remove all 513 files that appear to be installed by WMP so that I can start from scratch and see if a "virginal" install will solve the problem? Or does somebody have a clue as to what is going on. HELP!!

wekj - 03 Jun 2005 14:05 GMT This same problem is happening to everyone I know who uses WMP and who has upgraded to OS X Tiger. Microsoft may eventually get around to supplying us a WMP Tiger update [as have most of the suppliers of apps that I use] ... but then again, they may decide to play "hard to get". We have used WMP for Panther to listen to online radio because the WMP radio capability provided a neat radio search capability.

Well not to me (or the few people I have around me using WMP in TIger). I can't find out a way to reproduce this :-\

The problem is that a lot of people don;t post back in the group to let others know whether suggestions made here worked for them so I don;t always know what's going on. As far as I can tell, following the suggestions in the WMP FAQ works for 90% of the people. As far as Tiger is concerned, it's possible it introduces some changes that require for instance to trash the pref and .plist to allo WMP to create a new one from scratch (that ends up compatible with Tiger). In any case, as I was saying, WMP runs fine on my Mac under Tiger.
> 2) How does one deinstall WMP? Trash the app, trash the plug-in, trash the pref file and .plist. hold down the alt key and select "Empty the trash" from the icon in the Dock

DrG - 04 Jun 2005 04:01 GMT Regarding deinstalling WMP, I've done as you've said many, many time, but it doesn't solve the problem. Reinstalling WMP after doing this, I still cannot get it to work. And at the begining of installation, it notes that it is installing over 500 files. How do I rid myself of these other files so that I can truly install from scratch?
The WMP FAQ was very helpful. By copying the file to a text editor and pasting into WMPs "use URL", I can get WMP to download and play the file off of a web site. But I never had to do this before upgrading to Tiger and my other computer, where I installed Tiger BEFORE WMP, doesn't have the problem.
Any other ideas?

The app is actually a "package" that looks like an application in the Finder buth is actually a folder containing all the resources the application needs. That's pretty common nowadays under MacOS X (and already existed under MacOS 9). No need to worry for that.

It could be something that changed in the structure of the windows media flow themselves that broke it for WMP. It could also be a bug in the app itself. Anyway, if none of the usual trick worked, the only things that remains that comes to my mind is a bug in the app: if the path to the app or the file contains an "unusual" character, then it breaks it for WMP. Any non plain US-ASCII character in the paths on your hard drive ??

DrG - 07 Jun 2005 03:25 GMT Well, my hard drive is named DrG's Macintosh HD but it was that before I upgraded to Tiger and didn't have these problems then. I changed the hard drive's name to DrGs Macintosh and it now works! But why wasn't this a problem before??

This app is killing me!!! I ran some tests with the newer version of the Flip4Mac codecs lately and they allowed me to read most of the streams I tried to access. The usability wasn't perfect, but they are getting there (and they also need DRM support).
WMP9 is really way behind :-(

Mark Mahacek - 06 Jun 2005 16:17 GMT After a clean install of Tiger, I can play local movies, and join unicast video streams. What I can't do is join multicast video streams. And that's what I want to be able to do.

Mark Mahacek - 07 Jun 2005 15:38 GMT Yes, it the multicast stream we publish still works perfectly under 10.3 and WMP9.

Mark Mahacek - 07 Jun 2005 22:31 GMT Unfortunately no, as it's password protected for internal use. The stream is an educational tv channel that we multicast to school districts for a fee.

Do you happen to know what codec is used (audio and video) ??

Mark Mahacek - 09 Jun 2005 22:39 GMT I'm working on the client side, not the server side, but we're using WM9 codes on MS's encoding and multicast streaming products.
The following is our ASX file:
<asx version "1.0">
METV

<ref href="http://server/metv.nsc#154/>
METV

</asx>
On research based on the post by Letter 17, we tried the following:
metv.asx: <asx version "3.0">
METV

<ref href="mms://server/metv.nsc#154/>
METV

</asx>
metv.html:

This approach didn't work either.

As it hasn't connected, there isn't any information to show. You should try installing the Flip4Mac QuickTime codecs (that bring WMP support in QuickTIme) to see if you could get it to work this way.
The reader is shareware, but you can test it out for free (tit will then only read the first half of the files or something like that),
And waht about the tip that was posted for Tiger in this group a little while back ?? Message-ID: <B8B09F9B-7DDF-46CC-B7BC-A90E690F8CF6@microsoft.com>

Mark Mahacek - 14 Jun 2005 21:28 GMT The "invalid url" error is when I tried to open the stream in QT with Filp4Mac. All the other errors when opening the ASX file in WMP come after about 1-2 minutes of waiting.
I've tried the embeded HTML document in both Safari and Firefox.

> HI Mark, > [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Corentin leats1 - 06 Jun 2005 14:26 GMT I have had Tiger up for a couple of weeks and Windows Media Player has worked fine... Until yesterday, when it just failed to launch - the little icon bounces with the message "application failed to respond." I've tried uninstalling, emptying the trash, verifying and repairing the disk permissions, and deleting preferences... except, I can't find any preferences for WMP with Tiger. Even the vaunted Spotlight (which is great) turns up no preferences.
Nothing works. My WMP is dead. We can't be the only ones with dead players.
