I uninstalled and reinstalled WMP, but it does'nt show the app icon. Instead
it shows the APPs folder icon in its place. how do I correct this so that I
can run it properly?

Try the ususal:
- repair Permissions through Disk Utility
- trash the .plist and pref files for WMP
try again. Most of the time, these simple tasks do the trick,

Could you give more details ?
I ran a repair, but where are all the preferences files you mention stored ?

HD/Users/<your user>/Library/Preferences/
