- I'm accessing a horse racing online betting site called XPressbet.
- I've got the latest Mac system 10.3.7 and Media Player for Windows 9.
- I try to access a certain racetrack video feed and a W M Player window
appears briefly before a dialogue box comes on and says: "Cannot play back
the file. The file format is invalid"
- The site's tech support fellow (nice guy, but they don't have Macs!) tells
me to try to enable a format/file type called asf. He says Windows version
users can enable this option, but I tell him the Mac version does not seem to
allow any option like that.

What's going on here? I've tried, Netscape, Safari, and MS Explorer. Same
damn thing. Help anyone?

The proper MIME type for .asf is video/x-ms-asf
It's all described here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwmt/h
tml/mime.asp

The WMP installer should hae made the changes to the Internet Config
database, but if it hasn't, you can always use IE to access it and make
the changes yourself.

It could be another problem though... If this doesn't help with this
site, you can always check the FAQ for other options.

Though well meaning, your solution #1 - suggesting to me that a single
user [me!] can tell an enormous company [that should know better] to
change something on THEIR server - doesn't seem realistic.

In your second proposed solution, exactly HOW can I use IE to access "it"
and "make the changes myself."

I appreciate your help. Thanks.

:-) Sometimes, there is a bug on the site that needs to be adressed...
It's more realistic than you'd think. Sometimes webmasters really carte
about the fact that their viewers/customers actually get to see the data
they post ;-)
Simple users like us sometimes manage to get enormous compagnies (eg:
MS) to fix problems in their software - sometimes we fail (eg: WMP :->
).

Open the preferences in IE and it is in Receiving Files: File Helpers
