Why no DRM for Mac?

I agree, why no DRM for Mac OS 10?

According to the "Windows Media Player for Mac OS X FAQ,"  section 1.3 (
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/faq.
aspx ), WMP for Mac OS X does support DRM. However, it only supports
"version 1" of the DRM. That FAQ section concludes with, "We have
informed our content partners about this issue so that they can decide
whether to offer version 1 licenses to their customers who use Macintosh
computers."

Since Microsoft has a DRM system in place, perhaps the questions
regarding DRM issues on Macs needs to be directed at the content
providers instead of Microsoft?

Just a thought...

In my limited experience with DRM, WMP v. 9 for Mac OS X will play some DRM
encoded/protected video files, those that are appareintly using DRM "v.1,"
according to the FAQ quoted above. But this works via an inconvenient
procedure requiring Internet Explorer be set as the default browser.

However, the DRM encoding being used more and more widely includes a
protection scheme which sets a fixed time period after which the file is not
useable (a sort of virtual "renting" process). And this version/feature is
not supported for the Mac according to what I've been told by several content
providers.

Why can't Microsoft support all versions/features of DRM on the Mac with a
minimum of inconvenience? This would seem the more pertinent question...

I have talked to two different content providers, one who is
definitely pro Mac, and they both insist there is nothing they can do
and place the blame squarely on MS.

There is no doubt about it. The providers cannot bring DRM support on
the Mac themselves. THe most they could do is not use DRM7 (and that's
not going to happen).
It's up to MS to decide to port the technoilogy to MacOS X (or not...).
The same issue affects Office as well. We cannot open encrypted files
from Office 2003 since they also use DRM 7.
What I've heard in the past was that the DRM scheme is built in deep in
Windows and would represent a lot of work to port to MacOS X. I couldn't
say myself...:-(

There is support for DRM 1.3 in WMP9, but not 7. I guess they considered
it would be to much work to port it :-(
