Problem with HTTP Transport for WMP9 on MacOSX

I'm experiencing a playback problem in WMP9 whenever I try to play back
content over HTTP.  The movie will play for about 20 seconds and then stop.
The status bar shows "Buffering..." and then eventually the movie window goes
blank after about 30 seconds.

I've tried this on mulitple clients, and on mulitple webservers, all to the
same effect.  Note that I'm serving the file off Apache with no special
plug-ins and am not using a streaming protocol.  Judging from the server
logs, and the output of netstat, it appears that the server sends as much
data as can be buffered by the client, and the TCP socket is held open by the
TCP stack during the "Buffering..." stage until the WMP9 closes the socket,
as which point WMP9 draws the blank window.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any work arounds or solutions?

I forgot to mention:

*) The HTTP URL is typed directly into the WMP's "Open URL..." dialog box.
*) The problem seems to be aggravated by a slow link, but still
reproducible on a local net.
*) The problem does not occurr if the file is downloaded and played from a
file.
*) The problem does not occurr in WMP 8, 9, or 10 under Windows.
*) The problem does not occurr in WMP 7 for OS 9.
