You use the Mac version of WMP only for playing proprietary MS formats
like .wmv and .asf. QuickTime is the general-purpose media application
on the Mac (and should play your MPEG file).

For MPEG 2 you'll need an optional (not free) Apple plug-in. You can also use
thrid party players like MPlayer or VLC (a newer - much improved - version of
VLC just came out).

Well, I'm having problem getting WMPv9 to run an ASF formatted video file
with MPEG4 compression.
I've recently purchased a new video camera from Radio Shack. It records to
a SD flash memory card in ASF format and MPEG4 compression. When I patched
the camera to the USB port of my PowerBook G4 'Aluminum' running the newest
version of MacOS X v10.3.7 I could see the camera device as a volume on my
desktop. Upon coping the video files to my hard drive, I attempted to open
the file named 'I3010006.ASF' with Windows Media Play for Mac v9.0 and
receive the following message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file because the Player does not
support this codec."
Upon viewing this file in the 'Get Info' it declares that the file Kind is a
Windows Media Audio/Video File and Opens with Windows Media Player (default).
Of course, the files carry the Windows Media Player icon face.
The User's Manual Specifications of the Radio Shack DXG-301V Camera state
that the
File Format: Video: ASF
Compression Format: Video: MPEG4 standard
I don't receive any more luck with trying QuickTime either.
Can anyone help me to get these video files open to use and edit? Many
great thanks.

I would try transcoding the file through D-Vision (fre) or FFmpegX
(shareware). Both these apps recognize zillion of formats and could do
wonders there.
You can also try playing the file in VLC. It might be able toplay it
(and it's a pretty good media player anyway :-)) ).

I would take the video camera back to Radio Shack and ask for a refund.
Then I would go to Best Buy or some other store that sells video cameras
that saves their video in DV format. This way you can use iMovie for
FCP/FCE with the video camera and not have to worry about any compatibility
issues with installed apps.
