Somehow you're missing Stuffit Expander, or the file type got
associated with Quicktime (bizarre and inexplicable) Use this :

Neil, Bizarre and unexplicable as it may be, the file type must somehow be
getting associated with Quicktime for me as well because I have Stuffit In
fact, when I quick download the first thing it does is ask me what to expand
the file with and stuffit is my default. Is there a way to fix this?

select the file and press command-i
In the info pane you can re-associate the file to Stuffit expander adn
even save this setting as the default for this file type.
