I remember reading something about this a while ago.
There was two suiggestions:
1) launch GarageBand (this changes soe audio settings)
2) launch the Flip4Mac WMV prefpane and make sure the audio setups were
set to downsample audio to 48 kHz.
Does that help??

An intrequing idea; I will try it- but as only a few machines have garage

I've never experienced the problem myself so it makes it difficult for
me to find alternate solutions :-\
