Then that's either a bug with Stuffit expander, or the file you've
downloaded is corrupted. You should be able to expand it.
You should try re-downloading,

Additionally, instead of WMP9 (buggy and discontinued) you could try
using flip4mac WMV instead (free).

unfortunately that didn't work.  i had (and have since) downloaded the file
many times.  i also have downloaded flip4mac.  i was once able to watch
windows embedded in a website, but since then it doesn't work.  i have
uninstalled/deleted/reinstalled stuffit and flip4mac, but to no avail.

Well it could be that the site uses scripts or codecs not currently
supported on MacOS X.
What do you mean by "that didn't work". What happens exaxtly??
Any link I could try to see if I can reproduce the problem??

i probably should add that i am using the new core 2 duo.  i was once able
to view www.theage.com.au (see video section down the bottom of the page),
but not now.  "that didn't work" means that i have trashed and redownloaded
stuffit and wmp 9 many times, but to no avail.  same for flip 4 macs.

i just installed wmp 9 by deleting all media players (quicktime etc), and
then it downloaded no problems.  however, i still cannot view video files at
the site mentioned above.  without flip4 mac installed it says i need a
plugin, but then it says that plugin is unkown, so i install flip 4 mac, but
still doesn't work.

WMP9 is a PPC-only app.
if you want to use it in a browser, the browser has to run in Rosetta
mode (you can use Get Info on the application to force it to run in
Rosetta mode).

The Flip4Mac WMV codecs fro QuickTime are Universal Binary (they run
natively on PPC and Intel). They would work with your browser no matter
what,

If the codec is supported by Flip4Mac, I see no good reason to use WMP 9
instead whatsoever.....
