I am VERY new to Mac (just got it last week). I have installed both Flip4Mac
and WMP 9.  I can get videos to work off cnn.com (via quicktime) but I cannot
get them to work off tsn.ca.  I get an alert message telling me "URL is not
valid" message from quicktime.
The irony of it is, it was working in the the media player that
automatically launches when I clicked on the video link.  But after
installing the above programs, I get the alert mentioned above (I cant figure
out how to have it just launch in WMP as it goes directly to quicktime...I
have uninstalled both flip4mac and WMP several times but to no avail).
Any help would be TREMENDOUSLY appreciated.

I went on the site, but they require a login and password to get in so I
couldn't try anything.

Well you can alway deactivate FLip4Mac and load the page with WMP...
Usually when it fails to open the page, FLi5Mac offers to do the switch
for you. Did you get that warning??

I actually went to the flip4mac website and they acknowledged that they are
having errors with the problem I mentioned.  I also found out how to
COMPLETELY uninstall flip4mac from their website.  The great news is that now
I can see tsn.ca but I cannot see the videos from CNN.com unless I have
flip4mac.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Well if it's a bug in Fli4Mac, no suggestion other than to wait until
they fix it then :-\

Unfortunately, I think you are correct.  Thanks for your advice thus far.
You seem to provide a LOT of help to people.

Well I'm sorry I don't have a better solution for you.
You could of course run Windows and WMP through Parallels, but that's
rather costly (need a MacIntel, Parallels and a licence for Windows) and
rather not user friendly.

> You seem to provide a LOT of help to people.

I came in the newsgroup a while ago and noticed that 95% of the
questions were unanswered back then.
I knew some of the answers so I did my best to help out a few people
when I could (and put together a FAQ).

As time went by, I kept the habit of visiting this group. Many questions
are similar or at least related. If you have the solution for one, you
can easily extrapolate for all the related ones - no big deal ;-)

I have read your discussion with "Jay", and I'm not sure I exactly follow
what Jay's problem was.  My problem with windows media player for mac osx is
that I cannot play cnn broadcasts at all.  Everytime I click on a video clip,
a window opens saying that WMP is not detected.  I am then invited to "get
the player."  I have not only downloaded and succesfully installed "the
player", but I have also downloaded and installed the flip4mac stuff for
quicktime in an effort to get cnn.com to recognize the fact that I do indeed
have the player.  I have shutdown and restarted after install. For whatever
reason, cnn.com refuses to recognize WMP11 on my Mac OSX 10.4.8.  I am
browsing with Safari 2.0.4 (419.3).  I am pretty sure I'm not UNIX File
system, whatever that is.  If HBS+ or HPS+ or whatever it is the default,
then that's what I have.  To be frank, though, I really have no idea what I'm
doing.  I just want to watch american cnn braodcasts here in Taiwan.  Any
hope of that you may be able to give me would be very appreciated.  If there
is any information about my particular problem that I have left out, please,
let me know what it is, and I shall provide it to you.

I use the Flip4Mac codecs by default on my Mac and I can see the video
on CNN. What browser do you use??
(I tried OmniWeb, which is my default browser, but it worked equally
well in Safari on my Mac).

It has to be either WMP9 or Flip4Mac.

Few people actually use UFS (and there are few reasons to use it). You
are probably using HFS+.

I can think of a few things:
- WMP is messed-up and refuses to play (not a big surprise). Use
Flip4Mac instead. (if you don't know how to re-enable it, simply
reinstall the latest version and it will be enabled by default).
- it's a browser issue. But with Safari I doubt it.
- the behavior on the CNN mirror you are accessing is different than on
the US one (which is the one I tried). DO you have any direct link to a
page with a video so that I could try ?? They might use buggy scripts
for plug-in detection on this site.

Sorry, but I don't understand the following question: DO you have any direct
link to a

What do you mean by direct link to a page with a video?  I can get
Youtube.com videos just fine, but not CNN. Does that answer your question?
If not, I'll need you to explain.

How do I uninstall WMP 9?  I can't find an uninstaller for it.  I managed to
uninstall Flip4Mac.  Right now I'm trying to get a clean slate, so that I can
take your advice and just do Flip4Mac.

Thanks for your help,
Mimi

I need the link to a page that fails to display a video for you.
YouTube doesn't use WMP so it doesn't tell me much and CNN has multiple
mirrors depending on where people live so a link to a pge on their site
would indeed be helpful.

There is no uninstaler for WMP. You need to trash:
- the application
- the Internet plug-in
- the .plist from your Pref folder
- the preference file from you preference folder.

Hold down the alt key as you empty the trash from the icon in the Dock
to bypass the locked files in the applciation itself (I still don;t
understand whay they did that),
