RealPlayer from popping up at startup

I installed the Real Player G2 as the default audio player but and now every
time I start up, it tried to access the internet.  I ran msconfig and see
that it has inserted a command in the routine to do this on booting.

I would like to keep G2 on the computer but want to stop it from trying to
access the internet every time.  If I have to make Winamp or Media Player
the default player, that's fine.  I'm just not familiar enough with G2 to be
able to reconfigure it.  Any help is appreciated!

Hum... are you sure that's a Mac question??
If it is, it's simple: go to the System Preferneces and under Users,
remove it from the list of your startup items. Nevertheless, the rest of
your post make me wonder whether you posted in the right groups...
(microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.mac amongst all the other groups
you posted in)

Go back to msconfig.  Uncheck the box in front of that command line.
The next time you restart, that line will not run.

Thanks, I have done that.  It is fine for awhile, then after a few starts,
it comes up again.

You mean, the player re-inserts the command in msconfig?  That would
be a bit worrisome, were it my system.

If you have a firewall that allows you to block net access to
individual programs, that would keep RP from calling home {one of
real.com's annoying "features"}.

Otherwise, you might try Google {with the quotes}: "Real Player G2"
hacks.

I don't know if anything can be done about it, but if it can I'm sure
someone has found it.  RealPlayer apparently became nearly spyware
sooner than I thought.  Didn't know it reached back to G2.

Yeah, I just check msconfig again, and sure enough, there it is with a check
mark in the box again.   I think I'll just uninstall G2 and be done with it.
I remember in the pre-G2 days, Real Audio was the way to go.  There was a
reason I didn't install G2 when it came out -- must have been about the time
they stopped delivering a quality product.

Thanks for the help!

I know what you mean about the good old days with real.com.  I really
enjoyed it, back when alt.binaries.sounds.realaudio was a fairly
hopping place -- before broadband took off.  There were a lot of
really good times in this group.

I began to sour on Real, when they bought Xing, who made my
then-favorite mp3 player, just to get rid of competition.  Soon after,
players started trying to play every format they could, turned into
burning utilities, etc.  So instead of opening like a jackrabbit {on a
P-75} you now age at the keyboard while bloatware tries to launch.  {I
guess with RealPlayer, it's a matter of getting all it's snoop
features going.}

But I keep this group active in my news client, mostly as a
sentimental gesture.  The good times were really good.

I remember when..... watching C-SPAN with Real Player and dial-up and never
a problem.  So difficult to use these days, that I actually went out and
bought a RADIO!! :OD  Still a few good audio sites, but not like before.
