When I open a WMA file (sound snippet from a record store) the file
automatically downloads to my desktop which is very annoying since I go
through a dozens of sound snippets when shopping, resulting in my desktop
being a total mess. This is on an Intel iMac. However on my iBook the same
files just opens without downloading. How do I sort this out?

It probably all depends on how your plug-ins are set to handle files...
You should install RCDefaultApp:
http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/

to try and change these settings.
