I recently bought a used mac from a friend. He said that he doesn't know
why but the desktop file WindowsMedia.sitx can not be moved, opened, or
deleted. I would just like to delete it. I have already take Windows Media
Player 9 off of the computer.
The message I recieve upon attempting to drag the file into the trash is :
The item "WindowsMedia.sitx" is being used by another task right now
(Other tasks include moving, copying, or emptying the Trash)
This is just not possible because I have tried to delete the file upon start
up it does not work either.
When I click on the file Stuffit comes up and says :
An error has occurred while expanding the file "WindowsMedia.sitx"
(Format error). Error #17540
I do not know what else to do.

Try rebooting the Mac. You should be able to delete it after that.
