Ok, I stumbled upon the Flip4Mac Windows Media Quicktime plugin 2.0
today on the MS site (curiously enough, it's not listed on Mactopia.com
though)...Massive props to the MS folks for realizing the value of
Flip4Mac's product and acknowledging that many Mac users WANT to play
as much media as possible (including Windows Media) inside of
Quicktime. Kudos also to MS for striking a deal with deal with Flip4Mac
to distribute the player plugin for free.

All that said though, even at 2.0, the Flip4Mac plugin could still use
some work. While it works pretty well with Windows Media files already
on your system, it choked on several web streams of various Windows
Media. In fact, WMP OS X actually handled some of the streams better
than the Flip4Mac plugin could. THAT, folks, is not progress.

Work still needs to be done!

It does seem odd since that will probably be the first port of call
for Mac users if they're using MS products. I'll mention it about and
see if there's any interest in adding the link to that page (or
Corentin will ;-)

NB the plugin doesn't support any form of DRM media which
unfortunately will become increasingly prevalent over the coming
years. That isn't addressed by the current WMP9 for Mac either (other
than the old DRM1 style of content locking which is rarely used these
days).

Since can't play drm tracks is one of the more frequent complaints
here, I think there's still a disconnect which could be addressed.

That's nice, isn't it. Though I guess it must cut both ways - Flip get
extra exposure for their product, in particular a larger installed
base means more conversions to the paid-for content production
version. It's all good though.

Agree, had one unexplained QT crash yesterday when attempting to
change file attributes (in this case the clip "Title" attribute).

I'm looking into that in case it needs the full version to modify text
attributes, it could be an unintended side effect which hasn't been
tested, or my machine needed a reboot (even though I'd closed all QT
before the install).

Preliminary testing of the embedding code using QT embedding in Safari
and passing in a mime type of video/quicktime, but a source video of
bla.asf caused QT to render the 4mb of video data as text instead of
video. Still to check a lot of things there though before I get on
their forums. to report apparent errors.

The thing is about this, it will make some interesting changes to the
landscape for me as a web developer and digital media hacker. Lots of
things to test and check, so little time !

I get the feeling with the Flip crew that they'll be quite responsive
to well documented feedback of problems and bugs in this product, so
I'm looking forward to an interesting few months !

Should have been linked from the Mactopia sites but isn't.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/flip4mac.mspx

You can also get there from here (but not from the WM9 link)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/mac.aspx
via "Windows Media Components for QuickTime" link.

You can also get there from the WM for Mac download link on
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displan

Please note this is a playback-only component, the content creation
part is still a pay-for upgrade if you need to make WMV in Quicktime.

A quick Google search will show you the Flip4Mac website as the top
listing. I got it there.

I think they haven't had time to update their section of the site.
Thy have never been in charge of WMP and many of them were at MacWorld
this past week :-)

:-D
LOL!!

...or maybe, they need to receive some kind of instruction to do so from
the WMP people... and we know how the WMP people are responsive when it
comes to WMP for Mac :->

Hi,
I do not know if you had to get this Flip4Mac because you had problems
with WMP for OS X, but maybe you have an idea.
I just upgraded to Tiger on my powerbook. Now, I have downloaded and
installed WMP 4 or 5 times, and it will not open and will not play any
clips.
Have you heard of this and do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Drew

Trash the .plist and pref file and repair permissions as suggested in
the FAQ. It helps most of the time,
