I wasn't able to open media or use plugin, as most of you are complaining of
as well... tried reinstall, repairing permissions, but no good, always crash
on opening. (BTW, using 10.4.2, and WMP9 on a G5)
Here's what worked for me:
-Trashed the Windows Media Player folder from Applications folder and emptied
-Did a search for "media" (on Computer tab) and looked in Others for
anything saying Windows Media
-Trashed the Microsoft Windows Media plist file, the prefs file and the
internet plugin.
-Re-installed WMP9
... bingo, it's movie time.
No guarantees it will work for everyone, so do this at your own risk.

Trashing the pref and .plist for WMP fixes the problem for a *lot* of
people. Repairing permissions is also very often a good solution.
