mac network drive not password protected on xp

On Win XP, I have setup a mapped network drive to connect to my Mac OS
10.3. However, problem is it never prompts me for a password to connect
and goes directly to the home folder on my Mac, and I'm assuming others
on our network have complete access to my Mac too. Even if I turn off
the "windows sharing" option on my Mac, the mapped network drive on my
PC is still able to connect without password prompts-- what gives? How
do I enable protection on my Mac so PC users can't access it on the
network without a password?

I suspect one of three things is probably happening:

1. You've told Windows to store your password.
2. You have no password on your Mac account (try changing the password
on the Mac).
3. You're connecting to a completely different machine and thinking this
is your Mac.

thanks for your response. But weird thing is I've never told Windows to
store the password on that particular drive (the Mac). When I map the
drive it just connects automatically. I am 100 percent certain that a:)
I have login/password protection setup on my Mac; and I only have one
account setup on my Mac, which is the admin account; and b:) I know for
certain that it is not connecting to another Mac on the network, as
when I save a file in a directory on my Mac, it is reflected on the
mapped network drive on XP.

Any other suggestions? How would Windows already have the
login/password info if I've never entered it before? Anyway, thanks,

Hi cory!

Does that "share" have the "Everyone" group set to allow full access? If
so, then anyone can access without authenticating.

can tell) that allow "everyone" access as opposed to certain inviduals
... that would explain it, but I'm not sure where to look in Mac OS
10.3 for such an option. -cory

Hi cory!

I'm referring to your Windows machine. Locate the folder that you're
sharing and right-click it to get to Properties. Then look at the
permissions that are set for that folder. Do you see an Everyone group
or something similar?

Hi, Bill-
Hmm, not seeing it. On XP, I have a shared network drive to my Mac
(called new-host-6) and it appears as a shared folder. When I click on
its PROPERTIES, their is no option to set or view permissions. It just
has a tab for "general" and "customize," neither of which have
permissions.

I can only tell you what I'm doing in OS 10.4 - Which shouldn't really be too
much different to ten point three!

Go into sytem preferences (from the apple logo in the top left hand corner_

Then go into SHARING

Then on the SERVICES TAB, unlock the padlock, by entering your username and
password.
Then click on Windows Sharing
Then click ACCOUNTS
UNCHECK the ADMIN account ( or what ever the account you are using is called)

And then click done.

See if you're then still able to access your drive through your windows
machine.

If not re-enable it, this might re set up the password confirmation bit.

I must admit it's very odd what you're experiencing.

I'm trying to get windows to remember my login and password for my mac's
drive!
