Several Macs are on a Windows 2000/03-based network with 40 PCs.  I'm
able to connect to our file server from a few Macs and all the PCs
using a particular user account.  When trying to connect from this
single Mac with OS 10.3.9 I'm constantly getting an error message
indicating:

SMB://Dave/Public
Could not connect to the server becuase the name or password is not
correct.

Looks like there's an authentication issue.  Based on some of the posts
I've seen here, I've finally been able to gather the following:

* at a Terminal prompt can successfully resolve and PING by name
* using nmblookup I can resolve the server name
* using the string "smbclient -L //dave -N" I am getting output showing
all PCs with file shares available and the names of the "workgroups"

When I try to connect using the username/password I'm getting
auth-related error messages.  I've tried the Windows Domain Admin
ID/Password, I've used the Domain User account for the person who needs
to use this share, I've created a new "simple" user name and password
with short (<6 character) strings.

I'm not sure what's the next step.  Any ideas?  I'm just a humble
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.  This issue is so humbling.  :p
Very much TIA.

I'm not sure which type of PC you're trying to access, but your
description sounds like driver signing may be enabled.

Have a look at this information and see if you have this policy enabled.

Hope this helps! bill
