Enhance your computing experience!
It wasn't an upgrade, but it doesn't have any OS on it. I think I
purchased just the VPC6. Of course, I purchased this befoe I learned
that it wouldn't work on my G5. Returning it wasn't an option, because
they wanted a restocking fee.
Now, a year later, I find out I purchased the wrong thing. Great.
When VPC was Connectix, you could purchase different Windows OSes; 98,
2000, XP, etc. Can you still do that? Or do you have to get an actual
Windows software package intended for a PC? If so, how would I go about
purchasing older OSes?

Kirk,
Did your copy of VPC 6.0 have a Windows OS included with it ? Or was it just
VPC also ?

Howard

Yes, Microsoft offers VPC 7 with XP and is scheduled to ship VPC with
Windows 2000.

You can use retail versions of Windows with VPC.

eBay.

Dear Kirk:
I have a few observations for you as per your posted request.
Yesterday I purchased the VPC 7 upgrade, assuming I wouldn't have any
problem
installing it.
It installed just fine, but upon reading the manual I realized it was
no good.
Originally I had a G4 Mac and had purchased VPC ver. 3.0, but never
upgrade to
5.0. Mainly because I bought a G5, which would be meaningless since
only VPC 7.0
works on G5s.
So now I am in a Catch-22 because even if I were to purchase ver. 5.0
and try to
install it, it would not work.
I should have known that what "was" a good program on the G4 would be a
mess
once Bill Gates and MS took over.
What can I do?
I cannot return the upgrade and I do not feel like spending over $200
just to
buy the stand-alone version. This is ridiculous in my opinion.
Any help you can provide me is deeply appreciated.
Many thanks.
Best regards,
Glenn Welker

The VPC 5.0 installer should run... you should be able to do a custom
install of just the drive image.
As for the 7.0 upgrade, it installs the same version of the app as the
full version with Windows XP. What it does not install is the Windows
XP drive image. Assuming you have your own copy of Windows, you could
install that yourself.
VPC 7.0 is hardly useless to you...

Also, the standalone is not $200. That's the version that comes with
Windows that costs $200.

The Virtual PC 5.0 installer will work fine. You simply won't be able to run
the Virtual PC application itself.
After the installer runs (assuming you buy a copy of VPC 5 with Windows
included), you will have a Windows image file in your /Documents/Virtual PC
folder on the hard-drive. Simply move this to the /Documents/Virtual PC List
folder and then launch Virtual PC 7. Click on the New button and select
Import from a Previous version.
