I have purchased the latest Virtual PC version with Windows XP Pro
service pack 2 included and installed this on my Duo 2GHZ G5 Apple
with OS 10.3.6 and 2GHZ of Ram. This all works fine. It is like a
normal PC.
I have a USB 1.1 SCANSNAP FI-4110EOX from Fujitsu that works fine
connected to a Sony desktop with similarly windows XP Pro with
servicepack 2.
I installed the scansnap software with latest update under vitual PC
and connected the scanner with one of the USB ports of my G5. When I
start a single or duo page scan, the scanner kicks in when I press the
scan button. A page is scanned, Virtual PC starts up the scansnap
software and automatically opens, like it should and does on the Sony,
Acrobat. However, what appears is a blank page. In other words, it
scans, but somehow the image is not transferred to virtual PC on the
mac. When I reconnect the scanner with the Sony PC, all works fine.
There is nothing wrong with the scanner. I have tried switching USB
ports on my G5, but this does not make a difference and all USB ports
are fully functional (I did an extended hardware test on my G5 on
everything from CPU to memory etc..
I sent an e-mail to Fujitsu, but all they say is:
"We're sorry but there is no support for Virtual PC environments. If
you have any further questions please contract technical support at
1-800-626-4686 and press option 2, then 3."
Thank you
Fujitsu Customer Care
So no help from their side.
I am baffled as to why this happens, because Virtual PC on my G5 with
Windows XP Pro works great. It runs various PC programs without any
problem, including the Adobe Acrobat software. Virtual does recognize
the software from Scansnap and it recognizes the hardware during
installation and once it is connected. The PC desktop looks exactly
the same as the Sony PC.
So the question remains: Why does the page scan not show up on Virtual
PC? Is this a USB issue?
While Fujitsu has a Japanese OS X version of the software, this
version does not apply to this first model of their Scansnap.
Any thoughts?

Do you know my messages 4 and 5 in this thread :

My USB devices installed up to this way work all fine.
Have you updated Windows first of all ? Because even with a real PC,
without having updated Windows, I could't installed an Epson 1250
scanner.

Thank you. I have updated windows first. It has service pack 2 and all
critical updates after this.
But it still does not work despite the fact that the hardware is
recognised.

Have you read this:
From now:
This is fundamental, to use a printer USB (or all USB device) with
Windows and Virtual PC, it is necessary imperatively that this one
will be switch off on the Mac side and to switch on only when Windows
Desk is well installed, ie when Windows has finished working.
It is possible to let the USB link on.

Yes, in fact the scanner is only on AFTER the windows desk comes on.

I believe the best thing you have to do is to uninstall the all and
install another time harware and softwares.
Follow my advices. If something remain of the old installation, the new
one will not be as well as it's should be. Use Easycleaner for the
registry.
And let the softwares entirely be installed by Windows. I believe the
installation of mine were over but in fact the installation was not
finished.
Let Windows install the softwares at it's own speed and not your own
speed.

Thanks. I will try this. Right now I am away from my home on business.
But I get back December 16 and will retry as you suggested. If I get it
to work or not, I will let you know. Appreciate your replies, BB

I uninstalled virual PC completely, and reinstalled it and reinstalled
the Scansnap software. Connected the scanner after the desktop had
appeared etc. Scanner gets recognized, software installation (drivers)
gets done. When I press the scan button, the software starts up as it
is supposed to and adobe acrobat starts as well, but a blank page
appears and no text or grphics. The scanner works on a PC without any
problem. This must be a vitual PC USB problem. I will report this to
the microsoft team.

For the most part, scanners require hardware on MacOS X to access them.
If you don't have a USB scanner driver on the MacOS, I wouldn't expect
Virtual PC to be able to access this device without going through the
MacOS interface. If it works, great. But I wouldn't depend on it. Buy
a scanner that's supported on MacOS X.

All my USB devices are all Mac and PC and all are working fine on
Windows with VPC.

Just a word after this message.
If the scanner or USB device help , say restart by pushing the button
of start, don't do that.
Only this, the PC requires to be restart (in the VPC menus control then
restart). If your PC doesn't
require restart, restart the PC( in the VPC menus control then
restart). It's compulsory.
If not, the software is not installed on the PC. And eject Disc (in the
VPC menus Drives then eject disc)..
