VPC6 and printing

I recently bought a new all-in-one (HP Photosmart 2610), which is really
nice. I've successfully installed it on my iBook (G3, OS X 10.3.5),
though it won't work in Classic mode, no matter what I do. I also
installed the Windows drivers in VPC 6, activated USB and the printer,
and can't print. :( My old printer (now passed along to a relative)
printed just fine from VPC, so I don't quite understand what the problem
is. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Most likely your all-in-one device uses some special (non-standard)
protocol to talk with the computer, thus it does not look to the
computer like a regular printer would and hence can not be reached.
Non-standard means there is also a FAX, scanner and whatever else
that also need to talk to the computer via the USB port.

Maybe if you un-installed the Mac driver so there was an unaffected
USB path through to VPC (the Mac driver is probably intercepting all
the stuff for the all-in-one unit) then maybe it would under VPC.

This is a major pain even when just trying to share a printer over
a network - the all-in-one stuff is nowhere near as easy (if it can
be made to work at all) as just a plain old printer.....

Thanks for the answer, Billy. Unfortunately, uninstalling the Mac driver
would mean I couldn't print from the Mac, so it's not really an option
for me. Still, I appreciate the information and will just have to hope
that HP comes out with a fix of some sort sometime soon. :S

Try tricking Windows into thinking its a common old HP printer  - use
drivers that came with Windows rather than the ones supplied with the
printer.
Another option is to set it up as a network printer (as used by VPC6)
and print to it using a generic postscipt printer driver (only available
with Panther). See tips on this forum and also at:

Thanks for your two replies, Michael. I'm off to do some more reading!

Merci beaucoup, Jean-Michel. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me --
probably because it isn't a printer I'm trying to make work. It's an
all-in-one, which includes a fax, scanner, copier and printer in one
machine. HP says it just won't support anything to do with an all-in-one
in an emulator. It's too bad, but I will have to learn to work around
the problem, I guess.

Do you want to install the all-in-one in  Classic or in OS X ?
Because Classic is an emulator also and it's not possible to install
devices on it. And especially with VPC on it.

Print my two messages and read them attentively. Follow the advices
and especially when the printer or the USB devices have to be switch
on and off, when it's written to restart the PC restart the PC, because
it's compulsory if not the settings are not taken account.
When using the USB device after installing, you have to switch off the
device when you are on the Mac side and switch on it only when you are
in Windows.

Try to install your new HP in OS X and VPC with Windows on it.
I get an Epson printer and an Epson scanner installed in Windows,a 32
Mb pendisk... since 2000. And it works pretty well.

Which processor do you get on your iBook ?

I've installed my AIO on my iBook in both OS X and OS 9.2, but it
doesn't work in Classic. HP says they don't support emulators, though
they tried some work-arounds to help.  None worked.

Still no luck. :( I'll just have to figure out some workarounds.

I have a G3 with OS X 10.3.5. It's really too bad about all of this; I
used to have a Canon printer that worked flawlessly with OS X, Classic
and VPC, but I gave it to my daughter when I bought the AIO. :S

I'm very surprised by what HP has said to you. VPC is an emulator
that's right but you're installing your AIO not in VPC but in Windows.
I always succeed to install any USB device in Windows. You are able
with the advices I give you to the same.
With the same advices in french, many french VPC users are able to
install USB devices in Windows.

You have time to install your new AIO. You will succeed to do so.

There's something about AIOs that makes them use resources in the
computer on a constant basis, apparently. They won't "let go" in order
to be able to work in a different environment. At least that's what I'm
hearing. I had no trouble in installing the USB printer I had before;
it's just this AIO that's giving me problems.

However, yesterday someone gave me a link to something called CutePDF
Writer <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/28766>, and that
-- though a work around -- works perfectly for me. Basically, it allows
me to "print" to a .pdf file, just as we can in OS X. Since it's so easy
to share files between OS X and VPC, I can then print to paper from OS
X. It works like a charm! It isn't, of course, as easy as printing
immediately from VPC to paper, but it's easy and reliable.
