Can someone please go to zone.msn.com through IE within VPC and try to
play spades? This no longer works for me and I suspect it has something
to do with a new incompatibility with VPC and the lastest zone files.
However, I have no way to know for sure that the problem is not mine
locally.

Many many thanks if anyone can take a moment and try this out.

Howdy, Bean,

I also have recently had trouble with zone.msn.com, using VPC7, XP-Pro, and
IE.  I was trying to play backgammon instead of spades.  After several
failed installation and de-installation attempts I reached a point where the
download/installation process would fail because it was unable to write one
of the files.

Zone installation is tricky even if you have a real PC.  And support for it
is a good facsimile of non-existent.  I sent mail describing my plight to
the support address that you can find with a lot of digging.  What I got
back was a link to page telling me what I needed to remove to disinstall:
   zone.msn.com/en/support/article/support3203.htm
Unfortunately one of the links on that page (the one that's supposed to
describe how to delete cookies in temporary internet files) was to the wrong
page, so part of the disinstall instructions are effectively kept secret.

Since I'd only had VPC7 for about a week and hadn't installed much other
software, I disinstalled/reinstalled VPC7 intending to try to re-install
zone software from scratch.  Will do that sometime this weekend.

I should add that until about 14 months ago, with older versions of VPC and
IE, I was able to play backgammon at the zone.  At that point, though, they
upgraded their end beyond the compatibility level of my version of IE.  And
they no longer supported an upgrade path from the version of IE that I had
to a newer version (I was two major versions out of date).

Will let you know if my new attempt is successful.

Hi Bob,

I am pretty sure these errors are caused by something that changed on
the zone within the last month or so. Prior to that I was successfully
playing on the zone with VPC 6.1 for over a year. Then one day, while
the zone was updating itself, poof - gone!

Have reinstalled everything - windows os, VPC6.1 - upped to VPC 7 and
tried that. Always the same now. No dice.

I even rolled back my Mac OS to its pristine state from the CDs. So the
only variable left is that the zone is now doing something that is
incompatible with VPC.

Sucks. This is the only reason I use it.

Well, please let me know if you uncover anything helpful...

I hear ya.  That was my primary motivation for getting VPC on my new
machine.

Howdy, Bean,

I tried again with the zone software, and have a failure similar if not
identical to what I had orginally.  Here's what I did:

1) Starting with a fresh PC and OS (XP Pro) as far as the zone is concerned.
2) went to zone.msn.com
3) clicked "sign-in.net" and signed in
4) clicked on "backgammon"
5) recalling previous problems with zone installation regarding popups,
5a) followed instructions to disable popups and enable cookies, at
       zone.msn.com/en/support/article/support3209.htm
5b) except that the option "Override automatic cookie handling"
does not exist in the advanced tab, so I omitted that step
6) (back to backgammon page) click on "play with others"
7) browser window shows "msn games, downloading and installing latest
  version"
8) A message comes up near the top of my browser: "this site might require
the following activeX control:  essential msn games file"
8a) I choose "install activeX control", but meanwhile I notice that
the installation of step 7 has timed out
9) The browser window shows step 7 again, back at 0% (the 'timed out
  message has disappeared".
9a) A popup asks if I want to install this... Yes
9b) This goes through the full 100%
10) browser window now shows "loading backgammon games rooms"
11) A popup says "this will install the MSN Gaming Zone Software".
11a) I accept the default location
11b) "installing zone files" goes through 95 of 95KB
12) A popup requests that I accept the terms of use.  I do.
13) A popup says "installing zone files for zone friends".
   13a) it goes through 843 of 843KB
14) A popup says
"zone has encountered a problem and needs to close"
14a) I follow the links to detail of the error.  It is in
zone.exe and is an exception with
         code: 0xC0000005   flags: 0
         record: 0     address:  0...0106FB69
14b) I choose to report the error to microsoft

15) Eventually a popu tells me it has detected an incomplete installation
   of the zone software.

Anyone know enough about the intel processor line to know what exception
C0000005 is?  Either there's an error in the zone.exe software, or there's
an error in VPC in it's emulation of the intel processor.  In either case,
uSoft can't do their usual finger pointing and point at the other guy,
because the source for both is uSoft.  On the other hand uSoft doesn't
support either product, so they're just using a non-pointing finger, raised
toward us.

Yep this is exactly what happens to me as well. As I said, I suspect
the prob is with the zone software, as it worked fine with VPC until a
recent update.

Just out of curiosity, how can we find out what exception 0xC0000005 is?
I'm familiar with Intel's other line of processors (specifically the i960),
and the format of this exception suggests a similarity to the exception
codes in that line.

I feel your pain.  I have tried every method of support available to me to no
avail.  Has anyone solved the Zone Spades/Virtual PC mystery?  The only
reason I bought the program was for the spades.  I can't even find out if
someone's trying to fix it.  Please let me know if anyone has had success.
Thanks,
Trixie
