Can't get USB Running

I'm attempting to get my Garmin GPS receiver (which has a USB port) to talk
with the Garmin MapSource software, running under VPC and Windows 2000.

I'm using a TiBook 667 running OS X 10.2.8, and VPC 5.0.4.

The Garmin MapSource software is version 5.4.

At this point, I think I have the correct USB drivers installed under Win2k,
but VPC doesn't seem to be doing well with the USB device.

When I edit the "Settings" for my virtual PC, and click on the USB settings,
it indicates that USB is enabled.

When I plug in my GPS receiver, I see "Unknown USB device" in the window,
with a checkmark next to it. In the left side of the dialog, next to USB it
says 1 device in use. (So far, so good, I think....)

Now, when I click OK in the Settings dialog, then immediately re-open the
Settings dialog, it "sees" the "Unknown USB device", but it no longer has a
checkmark next to it.

I'd appreciate any suggestions folks have about how to get VPC to reliably
"see" my GPS receiver. Then I can deal with getting the Garmin software to
see the device.

Thanks!

Try using it with OS 9 instead of OS X.

I am also trying to get my Garmin (60CS) working.
I think I have solved your problem, but I have encountered another.
You have to shut down the PC.  then change the settings, then restart.
This works for me.  Otheriwse, I get your result.
However, I then still don't get MapSource to recognize my Garmin,
though it now seems to have USB enabled (though greyed out).
Let me know if you solve this one.

Matthew,
Thanks for the follow-up. If I understand correctly, you're suggesting
that I "check" the USB device in the "Settings" dialog after shutting
down the Virtual PC? I'll give that a try. I'm curious, when you do
that, do you see your GPS receiver listed as "Unknown", or something
else?

By the way, I'm really not interested in a solution that requires that
I boot into OS 9.

Thanks!

I'm also trying to connect to a 60CS (VirtualPC with Windows 2000).
My understanding is that the USB driver which is part of the MapSource
SW is not working under VirtualPC, i.e. is not working in the Mac HW
environment (in my case a PB G4).
Any help is welcome!

Matthew and Jim,
I am having the same problem.  I think that somehow VPC settings is
not seeing the driver for the GPS as it is listed as "unkown".  I have
also tried it with the new Garmin 6.0.6 beta version and it doesn't
work there either.  It does work on a Windows machine at my office.  I
will try to have my staff contact Microsoft VPC support and see if
they can help.  I will let you know if I find out anything from them.

As a follow up to my message above I loaded the Palm Desktop in the
VPC Windows to test my Palm USB.  It worked fine and when I went to
the VPC settings it showed that my Palm was connected and showed it as
Palm USB.  So perhaps my assumption is correct that VPC is not seeing
the Garmin driver.

Just another voice, having similar troubles.

Using DeLorme's Earthmate USB-GPS receiver:

 - Works fine with Windows 98 SE when booted in Sys 9.2.2, Using VPC
5.0.4
 - Will not see USB GPS receiver when running VPC 5.0.4 under Sys
10.2.8.
 - USB printer (Deskjet 990cse) work fine with VPC running under
either Sys 9 or 10!

When I upgraded to System 10.3.3 on the Mac (Panther) I lost VPC 5.0.4
(just wouldn't run).

I bought Microsoft's upgrade to VPC 6.1. Although the new version
converted my Windows 98 disk image fine, and ran all my other
programs, the USB-GPS receiver is still not recognized. No error
messages, just nothing happening in the DeLorme program. USB printer
works fine with VPC 6.1 too.

Sounds like we need some expert help from Connectix people if any of
them went to work for Microsoft...

For now, I just boot into System 9 when I need to use my laptop and my
GPS software. Doesn't help people who can't still boot into System 9
though!

Anybody who knows a fix or a knowledgeable person to contact would be
much appreciated.

Dick
