Is partition of HD required to install VPC

I have read the MS support tips on installs OS and programs but have
not seen anything about install VPC itself. How easy/difficult is it?
Do I have to partition my HD to make a Windows-specific disk? If so, I
may not be able to do. I am away from home, don't have my OSX install
discs, my optical drive is not working, and I don't have my external
disk to make a back-up of my HD. If I don't need to partition, then I
should be fine. I assume I can purchase VPC from MS website and
download directly. I have PPC chip running on OS 10.4.10; I want to
buy VPC 7 to run Win XP (home or pro?). Thanks for any insight. TE

First off, a working CD drive is required for installing this product.
Save your money for replacing your DVD drive (about $40 for a desktop
replacement that can burn dual-layer DVDs, more for a laptop version).
You won't be able to mount the VPC media and install the virtual machine
from the media without it.

VPC itself requires modifying MacOS X and a reboot to install the
product.  The installer takes you through it step by step.  If this
scares you, buy the product at the Apple Store and pay Apple to install
it for you at the Genius Bar (after your DVD drive is fixed).

Lastly, why are you buying VPC?  What programs do yo need to run on your
system that are Windows-only?  VPC _emulates_ the Intel chip and is very
slow.  Word and Quicken are OK, but forget about any sort of games,
video, audio, or devices that require USB 2.0 support.

Also, there is no download for VPC-Mac, it was never sold that way
from Microsoft, and it was discontinued when the Intel Macs came out.
You'll need to find a 3rd party vendor, or eBay to get a copy of
VPC-Mac now.

You guys need to switch to Parallels Desktop for Mac.  The current version
is rock solid.  I used it to install Windows XP Professional to a Black
MacBook with 2GB memory.  Why bother with VirtualPC?

The OP has a PowerMac, Parallels requires an Intel-based Mac to run.

Big difference.

Well, Dave, the OP said he was running on a PPC system which last time I
checked won't run Parallels (or VMware or Bootcamp).  Since I have a G4,
I'm in the same boat as the OP.  How about you?

Or are you running some special version of virtual reality where
Parallels runs on a PPC?  That's some great sh.t your smoking.  Where
can I get some?

I recently got on our local CraigsList a new unused full VPC 7 XP Pro
install package for C$65.
The seller got it for his new Intel (first) Mac as an extra with Office.
Being new to the Mac (a switcher) he didn't realize VPC doesn't run on
an Intel Mac.

I've noticed copies for sale on eBay. A used copy recently didn't sell
at $69, but sold at $39 when re listed.

Some sellers want $150 to $200 for a new copy, but there are some deals
such as this copy at $12.50  completing Aug-09-07 13:31:56 PDT.
