Hi everybody,
Just recently, when I try to start up virtual PC I get a message that
says virtual PC was not able to start up the mac audio system, and is
therefore unable to play sounds. Up until then, sounds had always
played just fine in virtual PC, and I have no idea what could have
caused the change, as I don't remember screwing with any sound/virtual
pc settings, or installing any updates or anything right before this
happened.
Does anybody have any ideas about how I might troubleshoot and/or fix
this issue?
I'm running the most recent version of both OS X (10.4.8) and virtual
PC (7.0.2).

luckylefty,
This is most likely due to recent use of a third party Mac audio
application that doesn't clean up properly on termination.
The quick fix is to launch GarageBand and then quit it. This has the
side effect of restoring the correct audio settings so VPC can use it.

Thanks. That fixed it.

Just another one of those "intuitive" Mac operations :-). Drove me crazy
as well until I stumbled onto it.
