I'm being prompted that the serial number for one copy of VPC is in use
by another machine on the network.
We have 10 unique licenses and I've tracked where they all are. There
are no rogue copies out there (I checked).
I shut down all running copies of VPC (checked with ARD scanning for all
running apps).
Still in use somewhere.
I then tried uninstalling one copy and using that serial number for this
system. All was well for a day, then the error was back.
I updated to 6.1.1-still in use.
I wiped the system and restored our master image-activated VPC with the
original serial-still in use; activated with the uninstalled
serial-still in use.
The Microsoft knowledgebase was useless ("You need a unique license for
each system").
Any relevant suggestions would be appreciated.

You may have to call Microsoft PSS, I've read about this problem before.

I would guess that you've tried the obvious: shutting down the Mac,
wait a few seconds and then restarting it. Sometimes the system can
complain about applications / files still already in use if (for
example) it has previously crashed.
Try unplugging that computer from the network to see if the problem is
with that Mac or somewhere else on the network (eg. a wireless network
may have a lurker "borrowin" bandwidth).
On Mac OS X you may also want to run the Fix Permissions procedure in
Disk Utility.
