Is anyone else having a problem upgrading to the new McAfee programs?
More specifically, I can upgrade Personal Firewall and Privacy, but
when I try to upgrade Antivirus, I either cannot shutdown Windows (it
hangs), or if I can restart the PC, it fails on log in and starts a
continuous reboot cycle.
If anyone has a workaround for this issue, please share it.
I am running both XP Home and XP Pro under Virtual PC 7.0.2 on a
PowerMac Dual 2.0 GHz G5.

I know the continuous reboot cycle from experience. In my case choosing
"Turn off PC" in the shutdown dialog remedied the situation until I
restarted Windows. In the meantime I used "Save PC's state"

Hans, thanks for the reply.
Is your advice to turn off the PC general advice, or specifically for
the problem of upgrading McAfee?

I'm not sure. Why don't you give it a try.

Kevin, I'm running into similar problems with VPC 7.0.2 on a G4 AGP/Mac
OS 10.4.7. After restarting following installation of the McAfee
updates, I get an error message saying that Personal Firewall couldn't
load. This is then followed by a host of other error messages ending
with "Windows must shut down because of an RPC error" leading to the
endless reboot cycle.
At this point my VPC image is toast and the only recourse is to restore
it from backup. Bottom line is don't install the McAfee updates
because they will not work with Virtual PC.

I have been fighting the same upgrade process since the first of September. I experienced the issue on my Win2k Pro image. After a number of fruitless tries, I upgraded to XP Pro. A choice I hated since XP runs like a dog [Mac disclosure - PowerBook G4, 1.5Ghz, 2GB Ram w/ VPC 7.0.2, XP SP2]. The XP Pro also was corrupted during the reboot process after the McAfee install, but to a less extent than the Win2k.
Today, in my third trip through the "Chat" customer support process at McAfee, I was told there are incompatibilities with McAfee ISS 2007 and Mac/VPC. I was told to de-install all of the McAfee programs and manuall clean out the registry - risky business. I couldn't even get my Norton 2006 to install.
I went back to my previous version of McAfee and it did reinstall. I just have to work to get the DATs flowing again.
Any known working suggestions are welcome.

Both Norton and McAfee provide too much overhead and will slow VPC down
considerably. The newer versions of these programs will most likely not
even install.
Why not use something like AVG or PC-Cillin? Both are free to download
and provide very little overhead. If you are not using email in
Windows, you really don't need any anti-virus software. It would be
more important to use a firewall (Windows XP SP2 firewall is fine) to
protect you from worms and get anti-spyware software to protect you
from unsolicited advertising and browser hijacking.
