Where did the Windows 2000 cd-rom come from? Is it a retail, OEM,
etc?
A regular retail CD shouldn't prompt you for this. If it's an OEM
cd-rom, it could be customized to look for a specific 2nd cd-rom that
came with the system.

A windows 2000 disk was purchased to upgrade an existing wintel machine
to a new operating system. This is a backup copy of the original.

It's an upgrade version of Windows 2000?
At any rate, it seems that the setup program is looking specifically
for a particular cd-rom, not just one with SP2 on it. Did you r
original purchase come with 2 disks?

VPC has problems with 'burned' CDs.
Try copying the contents of the CD to the Windows desktop and install
from there.
