I have a Lexmark Inkjet printer hooked up to my Imac. I am running
Virtual PC 6.1 with Windows 2000. My printer operates normally under
OSX, but when I tried to print out a Lotus spreadsheet from Windows,
it took 5:04 minutes!!!! Any suggestions?
Also, every time I start up Windows 2000, I have to reastablish the
USB connection to my printer. Is there a way around this?

The best thing to do is to install the printer on Windows (drivers and
software) without switch on the printer. You could let the USB on.
When it's done, you have only to switch on the printer when you are on
Windows. You have to do so each time to use the printer on Windows. My
Epson printer (760) works very well like this since 2000.
Search for in those forums more details.

Personally I never use a driver to talk directly to the printer.
I print 'via' the Mac this means I only install the drivers on the Mac side
(I use 2-3 different printers in different locations, some network and some
USB) and let VPC and the Mac sort it all out.
It is a little slow but I find it a better solution.

My solution is the best one. I use my printer installed on Windows as
I will use it with a real PC.
Just to install the driver and the soft on Windows. It's not very
difficult to do.
Of course after the settings for USB in the PC preferences and
restart the PC after( In the VPC menus, control and restart).
I get VPC since 2000, now with VPC 6.1.1. I always use USB devices
with VPC: Epson Printer 760, Epson Scanner Perfection 1250, ZIP 100
Mo, PenDisk 32 Mb;
and of course without being obliged to instal and load on Windows La
Cie CD burner, Microsoft mouse, floppy device, and hub.
All my devices are Mac and PC. And all work on Windows.
You have to install the devices just as it's done for a PC. And they
work just like on a real PC.
Just have a look on devices help and apply the installation for a PC.

Install the Windows driver for Lexmark in your Windows OS. This way, you
won't have to transfer data through OSX.

Thanks Gene - but I had installed the driver under VPC before posting
my problem. Any other suggestions?

Make sure that in the Windows Printers and Faxes control panel you have
the Lexmark printer selected, and not Mac Printer. The latter goes
through the printer emulation.
And in VPC's USB Settings, make sure the Lexmark printer is checked.

I have had the same problem with my Epson 760 and W 98 SE on VPC 6.1.1
Now, it's solved.
How ?
1) Click on start, click on parameters then control panel and click
on printers.
2) Rigt click on by default printer and click on properties.
3) Click on details tab then Spooler parameters
4) Click on uncheck the bidirectionnal support fot this printer.
5) Click on OK then click another time on OK to shut the printing
properties.
And restart the PC (control and restart).
My setting was in fact a parallel setting.
I hope my very bad translation will be usefull for you. I hope so.
W 98 SE and W 2000 are very similar.
Whether, my advice is not the good one, just have a look on search for
on the Microsoft site. (asking printer and W 2000, or printer and
spooler....)
And look one by one the different documents.
I solve my problem just like that but in french my native language.
After this setting, my printer works as well as on the mac side.
