I have osx 10.4.3 installed on a Powerbook G4 1GHz. Also installed is
VPC 7.0.2 with WinXP Pro. I can not Get Activesync to reconize my Dell
Axim 51v with WM5. The Axim can only have WM5 installed so rolling
back to Activesync 3.8 is not an option. I did have an older Ipaq that
would work fine with 3.8. Firewall is turn off on both Tiger and
Windows XP Pro. In the device manager, under the network adapters, the
Windows Mobile-based Device does show with an ! but it has a Code 10,
this device cannot start. At the top of the screen it does have
Location 0 (Dell Axim X51v). When plugging in the Axim it shows
connecting on its Activesync screen but nothing happens. The unit does
sync to another PC that is running WinXP pro at work. Any ides?

Yup, same for me with T-mob MDA. The phone tries to fake being a
network device and then cannot start up.
An old MADII syncs fine with same install of AS 4.1, but it does not
pretend to be a network (NDIS) device, it actually shows up as a USB
device.
MS buggered up AS worse than it was before, including no more Wifi sync
support....

I am having the same or very similar problem! I have a new Dell Axim x51v
and it will not sync up with either my Dell 5100 series computer or Sony
Laptop with Activesync 4.1--I have an iPaq that works just fine. Have you
found any solutions yet? Thanks. Brent

Hmmmm
You cannot sync any WM5 device with VPC however if you are saying you cannot
sync it with a real PC either then I may have the solution.
Connect your WM5 device to your PC.
Open Control Panel, networks.
You should see a network connection that has a number at the end of it,
random number don't worry about it.
Get properties on this network.
You will find that none of its properties are checked.
Check them all.
Save and close.
Unhook your WM5 device.
Connect it again and all should be fine.
Note that if you connect to a different USB port you may need to go through
this again.
Cheers.

Maybe you wanna check yer facts here. ActiveSync is not the problem.
It's WM5. WM5 does not work with VPC.

I agree partially, since as stated above, an older Windows CE device
works (as well as AS ever did, i.e. slow, lots of glitches etc) with
ActiSyn 4.1 and VPC 7.0 (using USB).
A lot of people are bummed now that WM5 devices (running Gates SW)
don't sync with another Gates product (AS) running on VPC (now also a
Gates product). See the Redmond hackers
should have checked that one LONG ago.
I am also bummed that even if WM5 talked to AS under VPC, they dropped
the sync-via-WiFi and syn-via-BT support, supposedly because some big
clients complained about security.

Agreed AND they also pulled the ability to sync 'when YOU want too'.
I.e. AS now syncs all the time.
I much preferred to do manual syncs when I wanted to do them.
This feature has also been removed.

Thanks, however, I don't have a PC (anymore).

I resolved this same problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the sync manager on my pc (ActiveSync4.5). I also installed the sync manager while the smart phone was connected via usb (MS recommended).
