I just received my new Powerbook 15" G4 with the new higher resolution
screen and 512Mb of RAM from the factory.

Virtual PC 7.0 will not install.  I get a continuous error after trying

to install Windows from the Virtual PC image "The PC could not be
installed because an unexpected error (-1) occurred"

The machine is brand new, (10/24/05) purchased online direct from
Apple.  It has 512Mb of Apple RAM.  Running Tiger 10.4.2 with all of
the current updates.

I first run virtual PC 7.0 from the distribution disks, then update to
7.02 with the downloaded update file, then try to install the Windows
version included with Virtual PC.  I consistently get the same error.

I purchased an extra 1gb of DDR2 memory from Crucial, and when I
originally got the message, uninstalled the additional chip to be
certain that was not the problem, since memory is frequently cited as
an issue.  No difference with or without the Crucial memory.

No additional programs running on the Mac.

I know that the distribution disk for virtual PC is ok since it
installed just fine on the now departed PowerBook G4 12" which I am
replacing.

HELP!!!

I too have VPC 7 with XP, however I did a complete install of the whole
VM then applied the 7.0,2 update (after XP was installed), then any XP
updates. Have you tried that?

I just got through trying that with a different, but no more successful
outcome.  I get all the way to the end of the XP install process, and
it stops but without anything showing up in the VPC OS list.  It is
just not there.  But there was no error message this time.

Getting worried....

i have the same 15" widescreen that you bought and VPC installed and
ran w/o a hitch.   i also replaced my 12" with it. :D

Not so sure about your problem, though.   How far through the install
does it get before you get that message?   You might also try removing
the ram that came with it and use just the crucial.   That would
probably rule out any memory problems 100%.

Thanks for the reply.

I get through the VPC install just fine, it is in the step where you
install the XP OS that it crashes.  I tried to install without the 7.02
upgrade, but the result was almost the same.  It gets to the end of the
XP install, then quits without an error message.  Only nothing shows up
in the VPC OS list.  Changing the memory did not alter anything.  I
also tried installing from my XP Pro CD,  but with the same result.

I am getting worried....

If that -1 is to represent a Mac error, that would be "queue element
not found during deletion"... and no, that doesn't make much sense to
me either.

Seeing as how this is an instalation issue, I'd call MS PSS.
Installation issues are free, and they'll be most likely to be able to
assist you if the problem is a bad CD.
billmccl@bellsouth.net - 29 Oct 2005 05:07 GMT
Thanks for your response.

Do you know how to reach MS PSS?  I honestly (not trying to be
sarcastic here)  thought that Microsoft Technical Support was a
contradiction in terms for the customer.  That is one of many reasons I
moved to Apple, to find a company that supports its products.

I am confident that the CD is fine since it installed on the 12"
PowerBook G4 just fine prior to my re-imaging its hard drive to
original Apple factory specs in order to sell to someone else.

MS provides very good support, most of the post here reflect that,
after users get over their anti-MS bias and call.

There are support links all over the microsoft site.
The fastest way to get to Mac products is via www.mactopia.com,
support specifically, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support.aspx
and VPC specifically  http://support.microsoft.com/vpcmac7/

I didn't have any of those links memorized except mactopia, they other
two are from just clicking through links.

On the last link, you'll see a "Need More Help? Contact a Support
Professional by Email, Online, or Phone" link.

Good luck
