I have found VPC 7 to be rather unstable, especially since I updated to
Mac OS 10.4.2. A few days ago I attempted to run Windows Update; the
update crashed Mac OS just before completion (with that pleasant little
white on black message "you must restart your computer").
Today I tried VPC again. After fixing its virtual drive (there were
several errors), it appeared to start normally. I ran AVG antivirus
update then tried Windows Update again. It said it had installed all 9
updates successfully, and requested that I restart my computer.
The shutdown was normal, but when it tried to restart it reported that
hal32.dll is missing or corrupted.
I am not keen on a complete reinstall of VPC and/or Windows. Is there
any way to obtain that missing file (which is almost certainly specific
to VPC)?

Chances are, you had a crash or a kernel panic at some point as they
seem far more common with 10.4.2. The rumor is that 10.4.3 should
address this.
In any case, a crash at the wrong time can damage or destroy key files.
Your choices are:
1) Reinstall Windows
2) Find or install another VM with the same version of Windows. Then
shut the VM down, mount it on the mac desktop, and copy out the missing
file to the mac. Finally, mount the original VM on the mac desktop and
copy the file into the damaged VM, placing it in the correct location.
Unmount that VM and then try launching it again. It should now work.

Thanks for the instructions.
HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer. It is present in every
Windows system, but because it adapts Windows to your hardware
configuration, I'm pretty sure that I need hal32.dll from VPC 7. A file
from someone else's Win XP Pro on a real PC would not help.
I have the VPC distribution disc, of course, but is there any way to
extract this one file from it without reinstalling all 2 GB plus of Win
XP Pro?

You're right... you can't pull it from another machine, hence the
reason I suggested finding another VM. I don't think there's any way to
get to it on the CD(s) without installing a new VM.

Oh, and hal32.dll is most certainly NOT specific to Virtual PC. It's a
key Windows file, and without it, Windows can not boot.
