Did you buy VPC with an OS or without?

What OS are you trying to install?

I got it through my school.  It came on one disk so I don't really know
if it came with an OS.  If the OS comes on a sperate disk (not the
instilation one), then I guess it didn't.  Im trying to us Windows XP
Home.

Ok, if you only got one disk, then you don't have an OS included.

Do you have a retail cd of XP Home?  If not, where did you get the
cd-rom?  If its from a different computer and is some kind of restore
cd its not likely to work.

While this is for VPC6, most of the info is very relevant for VPC7,
there's really only a few minor UI changes with regards to installing
an OS.

I got the cd rom through my school.  they sell all the microsoft
softwear to students with macs which came with virtual pc.  I tried to
follow the directions that you gave me for vpc6 but it tells me to
insert the install disk.  when i do my computer doesn't recognize that
the cd is in.  is there some other way to find an os so that I can use
vpc?

There are only 2 ways, get VPC with an OS, or install it yourself.
Since you've probably got some kind of volume license deal with MS
through the school, you can only get VPC w/o and OS.  You could buy
VPC with XP, however.

You need to have the XP Home cd in the Mac, it should show up on your
desktop.  After that, when you start your virtual machine to install
Windows, the cd should automatically mount.  If it doesn't start
booting from the cd, drag and drop the XP Home cd icon from your
desktop to the little cd-rom icon on the VPC toolbar, then reset it,
you can do this from the VPC menu, or by pressing command+R.

After that, you should see the installation screens for Windows
appear.

Vanessa,

the Virtual PC package that you received (with only one CD) does not
contain an OS. You will need a bootable Windows CD in order to create a
virtual machine.
