I'm using Win 2K in VPC 7.0.1 and Tiger 10.4.1

I have it set to Shared Networking but the darn thing just will not
access my internet connection through my Mac. I checked the firewall on
my Mac is turned off and it gives me a message telling me that other
firewall software is enabled and I have to turn that off? I haven't
installed any other firewall software any where on the VPC or Mac so I
have no idea what the hell is going on.

Can someone please offer some advice how I can get connected via VPC
again?

Hi, I had this problem and I looked on the Microsoft website (VM7 help
issues, etc)- it says to turn the Mac firewall ON - (I know, it
confused me too, but it works!)  Must be some kind of  odd inverse
thinking from microsoft! - actually, i think it is because if the mac
has the firewall on it knows what is going on and is happy (sorry for
the non-technical explanation), anyway, my firewall is set to on and
the VM7 works on 10.4.1, this is a miracle i couldnt accomplish with
vm6!

check with the guys that know on this site before committing yourself,
but it worked for me

Virtual PC for Mac uses ipfw(1) rules in order to implement Shared Networking.
So, Virtual PC actually enables your Mac's firewall in order to get the
whole thing
going.  If you have 3rd party firewalls installed, they won't work with
Virtual PC
because Virtual PC does not attempt to make changes to their configuration.

Unfortunately turning on OS X firewall didn't work :( Whenever I hit IE
I just get the "cannot find server" page.

I don't have a 3rd part firewall installed either. Typical microsoft
they don't make anything that works the way it should or is easily
remedied.

Don't be too quick to blame Microsoft for this. It's actually Tiger
that has caused the issue. When you get 'can't find server', it usually
indicates that you may be experiencing a DNS issue. Go to a command
prompt and try to ping 4.2.2.2 (Yahoo.com's DNS Server). If you get 4
replies, try to ping www.yahoo.com It will most likely fail. If so, you
need to add your ISP's DNS server addresses in the TCP/IP Properties
window.

I looked in my System Preferences and there is no DNS server address. I
am connected via Airport Express using ADSL on a line that is always
"on".

All I have within the TCP/IP Tab is:-
IP Address: 10.0.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.55.0
Router: 10.0.1.1

It all worked perfectly well before upgrading to Tiger, and I don't
hold Apple responsible for MS not upgrading their own software.

I'm not a tech person, never had to be as I use a Mac, so I'm quite
confused about what has changed with VPC.

Joining thread to solve my problem as well.

I have done this and been able to PING both the Server and the the Real
name.  Just as when I open IE I am able to access YAHOO and GOOGLE conduct
searches all live. But when I try to access anything else such as MICROSOFT
(any address) I get a 'can't find server' error.  All I am trying to do is
activate the automatic update for windows and to provide updated files for
my Streets and Trips.  This was the same when I attempted to activate my
Windows XP Pro. It couldn't find the server and so I had to to it via
telephone (painful to say the least).

Running Tiger 10.4.1 and VPC 7.0.1 on an eMac 1.25.  I don't have 10.3.9 as
I just purchased everything.

Not true... VPC, the Mac Firewall, and Netbarrier all use IPFW. Virtual
PC adds rules to IPFW to pass through. That's what that warning about
other firewall software is about...

The problem is that Netbarrier is very enthusiastic and continually
resets the rules that VPC puts in place, rather than honor that another
program on the Mac has made rules changes. This is why the Mac is
having problems. I recommend you contact Intego for support.

Turns out for me it was a compatibility issue between VPC 7 and Win2k,
seems they don't like each other. So today I installed XP Home, went
through that ridiculous activation process over the phone and now all
is well, I have full internet access. So it wasn't an Apple issue after
all.

Of course if only the 7.0.2 update was right everything would be
perfect.
The Lilienthal's - 29 Jun 2005 12:48 GMT
Installed 7.0.2 and am able to get the updates for Streets and Trips and
able to surf the net on everything but secure sites.  If it tries a secure
site or I attempt to set up Windows update I get a server timeout after a
"Site found. Awaiting response" and then "Unable to connect". Is there a way
to lengthen the server wait time?

Hmm... I run Win2K and have never had networking problems. Odd.
