Installed Virtual PC fine. Have my own copy of XP Pro so bought
Standalone version of Virtual PC. Made empty virtual machine fine. It
seems to capture the cd drive fine when I restart the virtual machine,
it doesn't bring up the "Press any key to boot from CD"  and when I
just click on "Setup.exe" it won't run either.  Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

You need to boot off the Windows XP cd-rom, thats the only way to
install Windows.

Is your XP a retail version?

Booting from a bootable CD-Rom  requires that you make sure
that the cmos setup is set to boot from cdrom then hard disk. also pressing
the space bar when the vpc is started so that it will boot from cdrom.

Each Virtual machine emulates a complete pc, including CMOS where boot
sequencing is setup.

Other than that, you have to make sure that  you check the VPC CD  menu to
make sure
that you release the vpc additions cdrom which sometimes gets captured and
then won't allow the actual cdrom to be recognized and  used.

Additionally, make sure that the Windows XP cdrom is not an upgrade and is
bootable.

The BIOS of VPC is already set to boot from CD, and in fact, you can't
change that. You can try to bring up the bios and make changes, but
they will not stick.

If the install CD is bootable, VPC will be able to boot from it without
having to access the BIOS.
