Hello,
I recently bought and installed Mac OS X 10.4 and Virtual PC 7 with
Windows XP Professional (SP2). Everytime I boot up the Virtual PC
application or Windows XP I get an error like "Virtual Switch
networking cannot be enabled" After many failed attempts to counter
that problem, I tried Shared Networking. Windows XP's internet -hardly-
works. Okay, well, it works, but on IE, for example, when I want to
load, say, the Microsoft Mactopia website, the page doesn't load (the
loading bar only increments one space every 2-3 minutes)
So I looked at VPC's manual, and it advises I shouldn't run Shared
Networking without AirPort. My PowerBook G4 -does- have AirPort, but
the outlet is around $299.99 I believe, and it's not worth buying
simply because Shared Networking is fussy.
When I bought VPC, CompUSA gave me a 14-day evaluation period -- after
that 14 days, I'm stuck with VPC. I was frantically trying to search
for answers, but it turns out e-mail support from Microsoft is $35 an
e-mail, and that's basically being greedy on their behalf. I checked
the newsgroup (this) next and found out there's a fix in the works, but
unfortunately as of now it's another 1-2 months away and I only have 8
days left in the evaluation period.
Can anyone give me suggestions? Thanks.

Virtual PC is not the culprit here. Internet access either works or it
doesn't work. There is no in-between.
I don't know what manual you're reading from, but Shared Networking
WILL work without Airport, so don't sweat about that.
I will bet money, based on your post, that you are able to access most
websites, but Microsoft websites will not load for you. Also, you
cannot do any Windows Updates.
The underlying reason for all of this lies with your Internet Provider.
You are probably using a PPPOE connection which uses a lower MTU
setting than 1500 (the default setting for Windows). Follow the steps
outlined in the following article to resolve your issue:

What do you mean Shared Networking will not work without Airport?
I have used on a regular basis Shared Networking both over Airport AND over
wired network with no problems whatsoever??????

I never was able to get mine to work with Virtual Switch...
... but I concur that AirPort does work under Shared Networking.

I forgot to mention:
Microsoft will give you a FULL refund if you are not satisfied with
VPC. 'Normal' timeframe is within 30 days .
The 'fix' you referred to (for Virtual Switch) will most likely NOT
resolve this particular issue.

Actually, internet access is broken in Virtual PC on Tiger. Microsmur
is supposedly working on a fix for this that should be ready "in a fe
months".

Internet access in Virtual PC on Tiger is NOT
