Backing up Mobile phone to Virtual PC

I have an LG 8120 mobile. I have installed the phone software and it
opens when I try to syncronise it doesnt connect with the phone. On a
PC the Com ports are used to connect. The phone is recognised in the
USB set up but I cant work out how to get a com port to recognise the
phone. Does anyone have any ideas.
