Undo drives, saving state and restarting

I can't quite figure out how to configure VPC to do what I want.  After
I get the virtual machine configured just how I like it, I want to save
this state (call it state A).  I want to be able to quit from Virtual PC
and have the application shut down immediately, without any saving of
the state of the virtual machine or its hard drive.  Then, the next time
I open VPC, I want the virtual machine to be at state A.  However, on
occasion, I might do something within the virtual machine (say, add a
new application), so then I'll want to save this state (call it B).
Then, each subsequent time I open VPC, I want it to open at state B, and
each time I quit, I want it to be without remembering any changes.

I thought that this is was Undo Drives was for, but it seems not
exactly.  The Undo Drive dialog, asking if I want to save changes to the
drive, only appears when I choose to turn off the virtual machine from
the Start menu.  In that case, it does what it is supposed to, so that
if I reject the changes, then the next time it boots up it will be at
the previous saved state.

What's wrong with that scenario is that I must shut down the PC and
restart it, and this takes excessive time.  Instead, I just want to quit
VPC and re-open it.

Is it possible?  Is the question clear?

Hi,

the problem with that is that Windows would be changing
the state of its system files, and while you could be discarding
the state of memory when you just quit Virtual PC, but the
system files in Windows would be at a state that rightly suggests
that Windows was not shut down properly.

Then on the next startup, Windows would proceed through its
recovery processes (checking disks, etc.) which takes much longer
to do!

The "saving state" does not mean saving the state of your entire
system... it means saving the state of the virtual PC; particularly its
memory and its virtual CPU state.

The "Undo Drives" feature can only be done after its virtual memory
system has been flushed... that is, you shut the PC down.

An alternative to what you propose is to not only use the "Undo Drives"
feature of Virtual PC, but also to simply suspend the PC, using the Quit
command from the Virtual PC menu.  While Windows does not shut down
and undo your drives in this case, Virtual PC will still stop and start faster
than the regular shutdown/startup process.  And should you want to undo
your drives at that point, then do the shutddown/startup procedure.
