VPC 6.1 corrupted file?

I recently purchased VPC 7.0 and would like to upgrade from VPC 6.1 on
my Powerbook 667 runing OS 10.3.8, but before I do, I tried to
duplicate my Windows 2000 VPC 6.1 file for backup protection. When I
attempted to copy the file using Finder, I recieved this message: "The
Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in
"BaseDrive.vhd" could not be read or written. (Error Code-36)".   When
I used the "Duplicate an existing PC" command under VPC, the task
appears completed, but when I click on the directory where it should
be, the file name vanishes instantly and I am unable to find the file.
All this seems strange since I am able to open the file and run my Win
2000 programs easily. Is the file or a portion of it corrupted?  Can it
be salvaged? I am reluctant to upgrade to 7.0 without a fully
functioning backup!

I think that you should make a new drive file for drive D, back up all you
can salvage off the C drive (the Windows 2000 VPC 6.1 file) and then
re-create your system (via a new C drive) under Virtual PC 7.

And... have you run chkdsk in Windows 2000 to check for the sanity of
your drive C?  ;-)

The original error message that you got about the basedrive.vhd file
indicates that you were trying to duplicate the file while Windows was
running (or in a saved state). Make sure that Windows shows as 'Not Running'
in the Virtual PC List window. Then duplicate it.

Shut down your virtual Windows session cleanly then in the VPC 6.1
control window choose Settings, select your VPC drive, and mount it on
the Mac desktop. (Microsoft missed one place to fix naming: the drive
still mounts with the name Connectix). You can then copy all the files
out of that drive into a Mac folder for backup purposes. Dismount the
drive on the Mac side when done.
