Could anyone provide me with some insight into how virtual desktop
programs such as Desktop Manager and Leopard's Spaces are implemented?
I fear that they do it by transitioning from one screen to another and
telling selected applications to Hide/Unhide themselves as appropriate
for the new screen.  This would not be good for an application I was
thinking of.

A documentation starting point would be fine, assuming it's not too
vague.  Thanks.

At least one such current tool - Virtue Desktops - is has source
available.

Looks like it relies on this undocumented stuff:
