I had a LW 360 that couldn't be stopped from printing that page. In the
process of attempting to get it to stop, I tried a lot of things,
including a snippet of Postscript that was supposed to stop it -- but
did not. I have long since lost that snippet, but you might be able to
google for it.

Not quite sure what you mean by a snippet? And how the printer gets
it. Is it a one-time thing? What words should I search google with?

A few lines -- maybe three or four.
It will start with the Postscript identifier "%!" (without the quotes),
and you can't just print it; you have to use an app that will send a
Postscript file. On older Mac systems, I would use BBEdit, which had a
"Send Postscript" command.
Again using pre-OS X systems, the Apple Laserwriter Utility (may not be
the correct name) had a command for turning the test page on and off.
And as a last resort, you can probably do what we finally started doing
with that LW 360 -- pull the paper tray out whenever you turn the
printer on. After three or four minutes, it won't print the test page
when you shove it in again.

Right now I am hooked to OS 8.6 but soon I will be using it on an
OS10.3.9 with 9.2 both on the hard disk. So I can set it using 8.6 or
9.
Like I said I know I had stopped the page before but forgot with what
utility. Off hand do you have a name of a utilityfor me to look for to
download? Does apple have one or can I use a HP 4-m laser utility I
already have on another older Mac computer with a HP Laser printer?

The best is you use the soft named "Apple Printer Utility" (about 1Mo)
and wich is in the folder "Compléments CD" of the CD install mac OS 8.6.
I give parts of the file "read me" wich is in the same folder, the last
line is for you.

Apple Printer Utility
This document contains important information about the Apple Printer
Utility Software for Mac OS-based computers. You may want to print this
document and keep it for future reference.

DJW-
I have three old Apple programs: Apple Printer Utility version 2.1.1,
Desktop Printer Utility version 1.3 and LaserWriter Utility version
7.6.2. I do not recall which one can turn off the startup page, but
suspect it was the LaserWriter Utility. (I don't have a working OS 7 or
8 machine to try it on right now.)
