A few weeks ago, suddenly, my hp laserjet 2200D hooked up to my
powerMac suddenly started to print with a lot of unwanted background
"shadows" or dirt. Is it a problem with my toner cartridge? Or is it
a problem with my printer?
(I don't want to buy a new toner cartridge if it is a printer problem
and not a cartridge problem...)

Try posting to 24hoursupport.helpdesk or one of the other consulting
groups. There are a few reasons it might be happening, and you'll have to
troubleshoot it, so be methodical. Try changing the cartridge, and if it
doesn't fix the problem, then it's the printer. You may have to take it to
a shop for a diagosis.
My printer just crapped out, too. ;(

Carolyn-
You will find some HP printer repair experts in the
comp.periphs.printers newsgroup.
When you post there, it would help if you provide more information about
the marks. Do they occur at the same place on each page? Do they
appear at regular intervals? If so, how far apart are they?

1. Post the question to an appropriate group.
2. Why in the world don't you have a new toner cartridge to "try"? Go
buy one now!
3. Learn to ask a question properly by carefully defining the problem
with sufficient detail.
I doubt that you are of the technical expertise to use this
information, but here's a hint anyway. If the "marks" happen to be
long black streaks down the page, the problem could be the "rubber"
rollers that guide the paper through the printer. HP rollers often
tend to self-destruct by turning into a black gooey mass. If the
"marks" are toner or unmelted toner, then the problem is probably a
bad fuser. Parts for all these problems are usually so expensive from
HP that the best solution is to dump your piece of crap printer in the
trash and by a Brother or something similar where you get an entire
printer for the price of an HP toner cartridge.
