I have found PNG to be the best format for Powerpoint. However, some of my
students seem to be able to prove me wrong. ;-)
Sometimes the the images don't show up and I find that one has to keep the
images in the same folder as the PPT file to maintain a link, even when my
students did not link them.

I don't quite understand. How can maintaining a link be a problem when no
link's been created?
