Hello. Here's the problem: I routinely get an "Insufficient Memory" message
and failure to print when attempting to print PowerPoint files, even small
ones (350K, for example).

Here's my configuration:

Operating system: Mac OS X 10.3.6
Application: PowerPoint 2004 for Mac, Version 11.1
Printer: HP2300 with 40M of memory

The problem files print without error from a PC.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Ann,

What is the free space of the disk or volume that the presentation
resides? You'll need more than 1 meg of free space on the volume to
print the file (there are lots of temp files involved). If your
presentation is on a floppy or small flash drive then the disk will fill
up and you'll get an insufficient memory message.

It's sitting on my desktop, and I have 60 Gig free space on the computer. Is
there some other location I should check for free space?

Nope, that's plenty of free space.

It's only this one presentation, right?  Maybe there's something corrupt
in the file - a picture perhaps?

Can you print a certain range?  Try printing the first half then the
second half and see if either half prints by itself.

You could also try deleting half the slides, saving the remainder with a
new file name and then try printing. The idea here is to isolate the
problem within the file. It could be a single slide or item on a single
slide causing the problem.

No, it is not just one presentation. It happens fairly regularly. Both my
Mac and my boss's Mac can't seem to print most of the PowerPoint files we
receive. I've tried printing one page, but even that will not work.

There seems to be some basic problem with Mac OS X and Powerpoint files.
These files all print jut fine--and very fast--on a PC.

Do you have any other thoughts on what I could do to find the problem?

Did you try playing with the advance printer settings. I found that some
printers did not like at all the Colorsync/color conversion in printer
setting.

Also, if you select to print detailed error report, did you find more clues?

ColorSync setting didn't do anyting. Here is the detailed printer error
report:

ERROR: limitcheck
OFFENDING COMMAND: image

STACK:

Does that help (I don't know what it means :-( ).

Thanks.

limitcheck errors usually mean that some limit internal to PostScript has been
exceeded.

That and the price of a cup of Starbuck's will get you a cup of Starbuck's but
it doesn't help much to fix the printing problem. ;-)

We used to get these from some apps when a gradient filled shape (circles
usually) had been reduced to some tiny size.  One piece of clipart from
Freelance was guaranteed to whack the printer every time, in fact.  The grad
fill had maybe 128 or 256 steps but was so tiny that it was asking the printer
to shove all those color changes into an area just a few pixels wide. Printer
throws (hands) up, and over it'd go.

www.prepressure.com has a useful database of PS error messages.  These two apply
here:

Revenge, I guess.  Macs can handle other stuff while PCs choke.  ;-)
