[ANNOUNCE] Google Problem

Beth Rosengard - 04 Aug 2003 21:43 GMT It appears that for some unknown reason, it is now impossible to post from Google to many of the Microsoft newsgroups. If you try, you get a variation on this: "Google Groups does not currently support posting to microsoft.public.mac.office.word".
We have no idea why this is happening (nor does Microsoft) but perhaps we can get it fixed if we all post to <groups-support@google.com> and ask for an explanation and a resolution. Even if you don't access the newsgroups via Google, you could help those users who do and there are many by posting such a message.
Thanks to all who take the time to help.
Please note that you can bypass Google (or other web access methods) by setting up Entourage or Outlook Express to act as a newsreader. Here's how:
1. In the Entourage (or OE) Folders list, click on the Microsoft News Server icon. Click OK when asked if you want the newsgroups to download. (If the Microsoft News Server icon does not appear in your folder list, see here: <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/help/start.html#Anchor-newsgroup>) 2. Once the list of newsgroups downloads, use the "Display newsgroups containing" box at the upper right to search on "mac" (no quotes). That will bring up all the Macintosh newsgroups. The current Mac groups for Office applications begin like this: microsoft.public.mac.office followed by .word or .excel or .entourage, etc. Select a newsgroup you're interested in and click Subscribe on the menu bar. The newsgroup will now display in bold and you will also find it in the folder list below the Microsoft News Server Icon. If you don't see it, click the arrow to the left of the server icon to expand the list of subscribed newsgroups.
3. Now click on any subscribed newsgroup in the folder list (or double-click from the preview pane) and it will open, downloading your quota of message headers. (You can change the number of downloaded headers in Tools/Accounts/News/Microsoft News Server/Options.)
4. Click on any header and the message body will download into the Preview Pane. Click the Reply to Newsgroup button to reply to the displayed message or the New button to start a new thread.

rafael montserrat - 04 Aug 2003 20:59 GMT Beth, You've given me these instructions before and they're good. I have a friend who's on PC. I'm encouraging him to get into newsgroups. Would you're explanation of bypassing Google apply to someone who's working on a PC? Thanks, Rafael

Friedland - 05 Aug 2003 08:46 GMT I had the same problem trying to post to this newsgroup using Google for the past ten days. It only compounded my frustrations. I finally found a way to post by going through the Microsoft Support Web site here:
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?NewsGroup=microsoft.public. mac.office.entourage&SLCID=US&ICP=GSS3&sd=GN&id=fh;en-us;newsgroups
Sorry for the long URL. I have already written to Google Groups Support about the problem.
Beth Rosengard - 05 Aug 2003 05:56 GMT I just got a post from Google saying that they have identified and fixed the problem. Thanks to all who helped out with this. I'm posting now from Google so if you see this message, you'll know that everything is back to normal.

For Mac users, by far the best news reading program is MTNewswatcher. Forget the others.

While I agree that MTNW is an excellent programme, far more capable & feature rich than Entourage, I tend to use the entourage news functions more than MTNW, simply because it is always there and available in entourage without having to fire up another app.
The MS news server used to be ready configured in the standard install - is that not still the case?

While I tend to agree with you - I use MTNW myself - it has a pretty significant learning curve compared to Entourage. For occasional reading, Entourage is perfectly adequate. There can also be an efficiency cost to using another application.
I suspect you'll find a few MacSoup adherents that would dispute MTNW's "best" rating - it has some advantages, too, and MTNW is getting very long in the tooth.
Lastly, there's an infrequent, but annoying bug in MTNW that crashes it when trying to open a list of articles. Doesn't happen very often and I'm not sure what sets it off (some sort of header corruption, undoubtedly), but when it does (and it seems to only happen to me on the msnews servers) the only fix I've found is to mark everything read.
I can telnet to the sever to read the unread posts, or use Entourage.

Aside from initial configuration (I use GigaNews) I found it pretty straightforward. Entourage is fine for occaisional use, but I do a lot on Newsgroups. Prefer them to web-based forums for speed of access.

In all my years of using MTNW, never had that happen. It's been very stable program, plus it starts up instantly, with all my favorite groups easy to access in a very small footprint, which means I can do other things without having a huge area taken up by the Entourage window. Great filters and everything else... Don't know about MacSoup

Well, just downloaded it, and right of the bat- it's much like Entourage in design and window footprint. Don't need another mail program. MT gets my vote all day long for making it so that takes up very little space on the desktop.

(P.S. Why was this ever cross-posted to 5 newsgroups?)

PLEASE always state which version of Microsoft Office you are using - **2004**, X or 2001. It's often impossible to answer your questions otherwise.
Beth Rosengard - 19 Sep 2005 07:13 GMT It may have been me that did that. It's so long ago that I don't remember. At the time, the Google posting problem was relevant to multiple groups, but the thread has been hijacked since and the title is now inappropriate. I suggest that whoever is interested in keeping the current thread alive change the subject and post to the single most appropriate group.

With MTnewswatcher, I can easily put in up in the corner and small type means I can scroll through a zillion threads in seconds.
