Interesting.
First, you need to roll out all of the possible causes. Make sure the software was installed correctly. Also, this is the biggie, make sure that the software is updated to the current version, which is 12.1.2.
It it's not, then that could explain why it is crashing. It's not getting the updated information from Microsoft that it needs.

I have all of the above and the save-as problem (pptx to ppt). Any solutions or work-arounds out there?

I know the "run disk utility, make sure all apps are updated, etc. etc." is the standard first step of troubleshooting but in this case it doesn't help. I did all those things and save as still crashes in some cases. What happens it a new 4K file gets created and then the crash report comes up (text pasted below).

This happens with certain presentations, not all. If I create a new deck, type a few characters and save it it works fine (kinda eliminates all that Disk Permission stuff). There's something in the presentations (this happens to a number of my presentations so I doubt they're all corrupted).

I also did a save as from a pptx to pptx (just in case it was corrupted) and then did a save as to ppt. Crash.

So a simple slide with just text or images = no problem. Slide with vector data = crash.

This happens even though the Compatibility report says no problem. Can anyone replicate this?

AND... PP2007 for Windows does not understand embedded PDF/vector images in a PP2008 for Mac file. So they look rasterized in PP2007 too. Eeek!

Hi, I had this same problem so I searched it on the internet and discovered
this forum. I have actually found a way to "cheat" it. Lol. You just need to
search out the file in your finder, Get Info and rename it from XXXX.pptx to
XXXX.ppt

This is a fairly major problem, as I create most of my Powerpoint images in Illustrator CS 3 and they look great as PDFs and in the Mac version pptx files, but cause all sorts of issues for clients (who generally use older PCs running older versions of ppt). I know some Mac users who never use the Mac version of ppt (and pptx) for this very reason.

Any suggestions or fixes are greatly appreciated, as I do not have the Windows version of ppt (and do not really use Windows).

For awhile I got it to stop crashing by doing a whole slew of maintenance procedures: repairing permissions, deep-cleaning caches, rebuilding the directory with Disk Warrior.

But I've since rebuilt my HD, reloaded everything, and the problem has returned. I'll try the maintenance routines again and report back.

I tried all these again and the problem still exists. PP crashes when saving a pptx file as a ppt file. These are PP files that I created, mostly in ppt, saved to pptx when I updated Office, and now can't save back to ppt format. Unlike other posters I have no embedded pdfs in them.

Exactly - only recently did I start getting this problem. I make all our graphs/charts in Illustrator, and even our logos are .EPS files. I can save to .pptx fine, but saving as a .ppt will crash EVERY time. I have to go back in and change every image to JPEG or PNG, or make sure to Save for Web out of Illustrator CS3 (making it look horrible). Any vector based image will cause a crash.

This is not okay. This needs to be addressed.

I have the exact same problem, and have also narrowed it down to vector graphics. I am not sure, but it seems to have started with the most recent Office update.
