This has been reported on other forums (and on MacFixIt) but no answer has been offered. When trying to save a pptx tile as a ppt file, Powerpoint crashes every time.
Working in a mixed environment this is a huge problem since presentations need to be downsaved so that other people can open them.

First, you need to roll out all of the possible causes. Make sure the software was installed correctly. Also, this is the biggie, make sure that the software is updated to the current version, which is 12.1.2. It it's not, then that could explain why it is crashing. It's not getting the updated information from Microsoft that it needs.
CyberTaz - 30 Aug 2008 12:45 GMT Additional to Cody's reply, run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after any & all updates to OS X or Office.

Any solutions or work-arounds out there?
Brad Stone - 01 Sep 2008 15:36 GMT I know the "run disk utility, make sure all apps are updated, etc. etc." is the standard first step of troubleshooting but in this case it doesn't help. I did all those things and save as still crashes in some cases. What happens it a new 4K file gets created and then the crash report comes up (text pasted below).
This happens with certain presentations, not all. If I create a new deck, type a few characters and save it it works fine (kinda eliminates all that Disk Permission stuff). There's something in the presentations (this happens to a number of my presentations so I doubt they're all corrupted).
I also did a save as from a pptx to pptx (just in case it was corrupted) and then did a save as to ppt. Crash.

Is it possible that the file contains something which may not be compatible with the 97-2004 format? It doesn't have to be corruption per se.
Are the problem files ones you've created yourself? If not what is their origin? How were they transmitted? Any additional details?

If I copy a slide from a problem pptx file to a ppt file, and then try to save, it ONLY crashes if the slide has some form of vector (PDF) object in it. So a simple slide with just text or images = no problem. Slide with vector data = crash.
This happens even though the Compatibility report says no problem. Can anyone replicate this?
CyberTaz - 08 Sep 2008 04:11 GMT I believe what you're running into may be related to a current bug affecting Office 2008 apps and their "receptiveness" to PDF files. As yet there is no fix that I'm aware of.
You might try using Illy's Export command to create a version as a PNG (or other appropriate format). PDF is the only thing involved.

I did not have this problem before the latest OSX upgrade, I think. Comments on this welcome?
Does anybody know, whether there is a fix coming to this?

I can get it to save as an earlier .ppt format using Windows PP2007 but it rasterizes the vector data (quite horribly if the PDF has been resized within PP2008). So herein lies the issue - and previous versions of PowerPoint couldn't handle PDF objects, so perhaps there isn't an easy solution. Shouldn't make it *crash* though, really...

AND... PP2007 for Windows does not understand embedded PDF/vector images in a PP2008 for Mac file. So they look rasterized in PP2007 too. Eeek!

Hi, I had this same problem so I searched it on the internet and discovered this forum. I have actually found a way to "cheat" it. Lol. You just need to search out the file in your finder, Get Info and rename it from XXXX.pptx to XXXX.ppt
Kr4g0tHiC - 08 Sep 2008 15:03 GMT Hmmmm... very sorry for the double post. Don't know how to edit it but i realized that my "cheat" does not work. I tried transferring the file to another com with windows and i couldn't open.

As a result that app is using the wrong method which not only results in a failure to open the file but also could damage it.

I know some Mac users who never use the Mac version of ppt (and pptx) for this very reason.
Any suggestions or fixes are greatly appreciated, as I do not have the Windows version of ppt (and do not really use Windows).
CyberTaz - 14 Sep 2008 17:28 GMT Sorry, but as yet there is no fix. You're certainly the best judge of what produces the best results for your artwork, but you might consider PNG or other alternatives if you have to save the PPt files in the older format. As long as the output is "acceptable" it beats *unusable* hands down :-)... and I know I'm my own harshest critic.

FrankRP@officeformac.com - 14 Sep 2008 16:19 GMT > This has been reported on other forums (and on MacFixIt) but no answer has been offered. When trying to save a pptx tile as a ppt file, Powerpoint crashes every time. For awhile I got it to stop crashing by doing a whole slew of maintenance procedures: repairing permissions, deep-cleaning caches, rebuilding the directory with Disk Warrior.
But I've since rebuilt my HD, reloaded everything, and the problem has returned. I'll try the maintenance routines again and report back.

I tried all these again and the problem still exists. PP crashes when saving a pptx file as a ppt file. These are PP files that I created, mostly in ppt, saved to pptx when I updated Office, and now can't save back to ppt format. Unlike other posters I have no embedded pdfs in them.
This problem started with the latest update to 12.1.2. It didn't exist before then.
JT - 16 Sep 2008 21:02 GMT I have this problem and i have narrowed the problem down a bit.
Exactly - only recently did I start getting this problem. I make all our graphs/charts in Illustrator, and even our logos are .EPS files. I can save to .pptx fine, but saving as a .ppt will crash EVERY time. I have to go back in and change every image to JPEG or PNG, or make sure to Save for Web out of Illustrator CS3 (making it look horrible). Any vector based image will cause a crash.
This is not okay. This needs to be addressed.
CyberTaz - 16 Sep 2008 22:10 GMT Hi JT -
I've been following this issue since its inception & that's the first I've heard of EPS having any problem - PDF & AI, yes. In fact, on seeing what you wrote I just inserted an EPS created in Photoshop this morning & added an Illy EPS along with it & had no problem saving in the 97-2004 format. I even stuck in an EMF (as well as a PNG even though it's not vector) for good measure & suffered no ill effects.
If you can supply any additional detail [software & hardware] I'd appreciate it - I'm trying to get a detailed bug report together to submit to MS.

I have the exact same problem, and have also narrowed it down to vector graphics. I am not sure, but it seems to have started with the most recent Office update.

Bill - 26 Sep 2008 10:52 GMT Thanks for the posts, I've just spent most of the night trying to make he conversion of a presentation from pptx to ppt for a client and was getting the same crash. The presentation includes a bunch of PDF images.
Just wanted to add my voice to the cry that this needs to be fixed.
CyberTaz - 27 Sep 2008 05:18 GMT Bill, Jan, Ben, et al;
I appreciate your ire & share your pain, but this is just a public newsgroup, not a direct channel of communication to MS.
If you want to put a burr under their saddle use Help> Send Feedback. That way your points will be made to the people who may be able to do something about it. Here you're simply complaining to other users... Most of whom are already keenly aware of the problem :-)
