I have the same issue with the formatting palette, except that everything was there and then most of it just vanished. I have turned on all the items I want on the back of the palette and clicked OK, but it has no effect.
Also, how do you access the old "Group/Ungroup" function for multiple items on the page, or is this no longer necessary?
Overall, this is just another example of why I regret switching to the entire 2008 Office suite. I'm a reasonably intuitive person, but it's like learning a new language, when everything worked just fine before. Who has the time?
There are several Formatting Palette items which are context sensitive - If

Turns out this was a context driven issue and my mouse had clicked off the particular object I was trying to modify, nonetheless, I wouldn't call this "feature" a design improvement.
