Yeah, I'm afraid this is a known bug. MS is aware but as yet there is no
fix... Perhaps in an upcoming update:-) In the meantime you've found the
best workaround - use the Format Table dialog.

You can still get the shading in Word 2008. Make the table in Word, format
it there, then copy and paste it into PowerPoint.
