Mac Forum / Applications / PowerPoint / October 2007Installing Power Point Viewer 98 on Mac OS X 10.4
I'm trying to download the PPT viewer to read some lecture notes. I'm on a Macbook running OS X 10.4. First I downloaded the viewer and it showed an expander icon (i think) with a white circle with a slash through it. So then I downloaded stuffit expander and was able to expand the download. i redownloaded the compressed viewer from microsoft and the folder showed up on my desktop with a little office logo. the folder contains these four files: License, and Read me (text files), another folder called supporting files, and a Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer icon. but the icon has the same white circle with a slash that i encountered before! When i double click on this application it gives the following error message: you cannot open this application because it is not supported by the system. Same thing happens when i try and open my lecture notes. How do I get this program to work?? And another thing...in the Readme file it gave me a tech support number to call that was out of order! boo microsoft i want my free tech support. You're kidding right? We're talking about PowerPoint 98 (as in 1998) Viewer. It's no surprise it's not running correctly, since it was written for the operating systems of 1998, not today's operating systems! The system requirements on the web page plainly state: To use PowerPoint 98 or Office 98, you need: * Apple System 7.5 to 9.x. ; )  SignatureNote: Please send all responses to the relevant news group. As long as we're putting in orders, let's go for free tuition, beer and Miatas. OK. Enough of that. Wakeywakey time. ;-) There's a company that claims to have a crossplatform viewer that'll work on Mac. Free programs that can play PowerPoint presentations in 10.4: OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/ NeoOffice http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php As with the old PowerPoint player, everything that is included with PowerPoint itself is not supported in the above applications. Macros and add-ins will not work. Fonts may be substituted. Animations, transitions, and animation paths may not play as the author created them. On the other hand, they are free and are probably more than adequate for most lecture notes. Sadly, few instructors have much talent when it comes to making PowerPoint presentations.
