Crash followed by auto-recovery failure

Familiar Story:
Hours of work invested in presentation w/ fast approaching deadline.
Troubleshot ad infinitum-->exhaustion.

Particulars:
OSX Tiger w/ Office X
Program crashed (auto-recovery on and apparently operational)
On restart, presentation reverted to previous hard save.  All auto-
save files located thus far appear to be of the same useless save.

Any hope for recovery?

Kudos in advance.
