say your with your client doing a presentation and ooops! you hit the wrong
button and the show collapses back to pre-view slide mode, is there any way
to start it back up from where you left off or do I have to hit f5 again and
go through from slide 1 to 343 all over again?

Click on the icon in the lower left corner of the screen that looks like a
projector screen. That will start you from the current slide.

In addition to David's sage advice...

I can't recall for certain in 2004 (this is an assumption since you don't
mention version) and am not at a Mac to check, but once you restart the
presentation Control+Click & see if there isn't a navigation command such as
"Go To Slide..." in the contextual menu.

If you're using a PC version you're in the wrong group, but the suggestion
definitely is valid except that the appropriate technique is known as a
"right-click":)
